JOHN ANDRETTI IN THE No. 10 FREEDOM ROADS/CAMPING WORLD FORD WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE AT DARLINGTON.
Notes:

  • Andretti finished 15th and took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the fourth time this season, most of any driver.
  • Andretti UNOFFICIALLY moved into second place in the Raybestos Rookie standings behind Burney Lamar (124-106).
ANDRETTI: “Do the math, that’s 24 spots that we came up. Another hundred miles, we wouldn’t have finished right at the front but we had a really fast car, had a good car and I think we would have had a really good finish. Otherwise, I’m happy with this finish. Starting 39th, I was a little bit worried, being my first Busch race here but it worked out okay.” THE CAR DOESN’T APPEAR TO HAVE A SCRATCH ON IT. “Naw, I got a little on the right front fender, just a nick. But other than that, everything looks good. When I get an old car I can’t hurt it. When I get a new car I tear the thing in half.” HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR THIS TEAM TO BUILD CONSISTENCY? “Well, we’re consistent, we just have to step it up one notch. I mean, we can run in the top-10 occasionally, but we’re pretty much a 15th to 20th-place car when all those Cup guys show up. We’re working at it and we’re getting there and it’s a process. I’m please with it. It’s hard to be pleased with that but I know it’s coming. I keep telling them that by July and August we should have closed the gap.”

MARK MCFARLAND, No. 88 NAVY CHEVROLET: “It wasn’t bad. My first time here in Darlington it was fun. I got to battle some veterans there at the end. They put it on me [laughs]. It’s a fun track. I’m looking forward to going to Charlotte and the rest of the races this year. It’s coming around. We’re getting some good cars built. We’re just moving on up.” HOW DIFFICULT WAS IT TO RACE HERE? “It’s pretty difficult to race but it’s difficult to keep the tires under it and be good on the long runs. It paid off to be good on the long run that one time but the short run was good there at the end. I’m pretty proud of this team.” DID YOU RACE ANYBODY? “I had a good race there with Kenny Wallace there at the end. He came over and told me that he put the old Earnhardt move on me over here in turn 1. That was pretty cool. It was fun learning from him and racing with him.”

TODD KLUEVER, No. 06 3M FORD: “It wasn’t going to be a stellar night for us but I think we would have been right around top-15. The 10 and the 22 were right around me and finished 15th and 16th. It would have been a decent first time to Darlington for us. Whenever that wreck happened off of 4, I thought I was clear. I thought I had driven past the wreck and all of a sudden I got blasted in the door. I guess the 33 spun into the 22 and it just destroyed our night. I’m speechless right now. I’ve never had such bad luck in my entire life. Every single time we’re going to have a semi-solid car we get wrecked or crashed or something stupid happens. I’m really at a loss for words right now.”

BURNEY LAMAR, No. 77 DOLLAR GENERAL CHEVROLET: “I’m sort of disappointed. Man, we had a really good car. I was out there cruising the whole first run. When we got that long run, the leaders were coming so I started going and we were pulling away from the leaders. We thought the car was good then we changed both sets of tires and it was so tight and that’s why we ended up getting passed. The crew did a great job. The driver has got to learn that things change a lot. Had I told Gene that the car was tight I could have had them loosen it up more. But it’s part of learning.” THE CAUTIONS AT THE END DIDN’T GIVE YOU A CHANCE TO MOVE UP? “Our car was so tight I don’t know if it would have hurt us or helped us. Like I said, man, the car was really good there at the beginning. I just wish we could have had that car through the whole race. If I had to do it again, I would have told Gene to loosen it up a lot more and I think we would have been right there.”

DANNY O’QUINN JR., No. 50 WORLD FINANCIAL GROUP FORD: We started off and had a left-rear flat and lost a couple laps and the night didn’t get any better from there. We were just stuck in a hole there. I was struggling out there and we were having handling issues. I had ‘em adjust it the wrong way at first thinking we needed to be a little snugger and got it so tight there through the center we were just way off the pace. By the end I got them the free it up for me and I was a little better but we just struggled. I was having time out there. But the team worked hard and gave me good pit stops. We’ll just go try to get things turned around at Charlotte.”

KEVIN CONWAY, No. 40 CARVER RACING DODGE: “We finished at Darlington. This is the second race for this whole team for Carver Racing and we’re ecstatic. It’s a brand new team. We barely made it into the show. That wasn’t what we were really looking for in qualifying but we got in. We learned a lot. We’re just trying to get the right people in the right places and continue to build good cars. This gives us momentum to head into Charlotte. We raced our way back onto the lead lap, got back on the lead lap there at the end and ended up 28th on the lead lap. For our first time here at Darlington, I’ll take it.” WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THIS YOUNG TEAM? “The biggest thing is to get the team together and get all the people in the right places and get that chemistry going that people always talk about so much but it’s so important. The Busch Series has become so competitive with the infiltration of all the Cup guys that the field has really evened up competition-wise. Everybody has the same equipment so it gets back to the people working on the cars. For us right now, as competitive as it is, we want to make the races and finish races and then we’ll start working on improving qualifying efforts and improving our race runs.”
