Looking Back:
To recognize the history of the NASCAR Busch Series, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2006, each week we’ll take a look back into David Green’s 16-year racing history, as it relates to this week’s track:
In 1991, David Green signed up with Filmar Racing to drive the No. 8 Busch Series car and made an immediate impact by winning the pole position at the season-opening Goody's 300 at Daytona International Speedway that year. It was his first-ever pole in the NASCAR Busch Series.
David Green on Daytona:
“Obviously with this race being the halfway point of the season, it’s a special one for us. With all that we’ve learned about our cars and about the new 2006 tires, we’re looking forward to putting all that data into use and turn our season around on a good, positive note – compared to our run here in February - and let that set the stage for the second half of our season. We know we can create some good momentum for the remainder of the season with a good solid run on Friday.
“The night race here in Daytona is still a very difficult race, given the handling characteristics that come with the heat of July. The track seems to be so different at night, especially with all the close quarters racing, drafting and the occasional bump draft here and there.
“We participated in a Goodyear tire test at Daytona a few months ago and we are excited about what we learned there. We think the more durable tire will enable us to make a full fuel run and still have our cars underneath us and running very well.
“It’s still the ultimate for a driver and crew to have a win at Daytona, whether it is February or July. Our plan is to get a good practice session under us, tweak our car accordingly, and go from there. We know we have to get front grip into our car for the entire fuel run. If we can do that, we will be there at the end, in contention for the win.
“This weekend we are taking our primary car from the February race here, which got wrecked in practice. That car was awesome in the test and in the first ten minutes of February practice. (Co-Crew Chief) Stewart (Cooper) and the guys put the car back together and even made more changes to help our front grip throughout the fuel run. It’s a sure thing that handling will still win the race. We showed in Talladega that we can build speed into our Ford Fusion and with the knowledge we gained there, we went back and copied some of those notes into our speedway handling package.”
