Hershey's Kissables 300 - Daytona International Speedway
Stewart Wins Busch Season Opener at Daytona
Tony Stewart got a little help from rookie teammate Burney Lamar as he captured the season-opening NASCAR Busch Series Hershey’s Kissables 300 at Daytona International Speedway on a sun-drenched Saturday afternoon. The race kicked off the 25th anniversary season of the series sponsor, Anheuser-Busch. In a wild finish that featured three-wide racing four rows deep for the final handful of laps, including an 11-car incident just before the checkered flag flew, the reigning NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champion won his second NASCAR Busch Series race in 54 starts, and his second straight February event at Daytona. The last-lap melee brought out the last of an event-record 10 cautions just before Stewart crossed the finish line. After a lengthy review by NASCAR officials to re-sort the finishing order, Lamar, a Raybestos Rookie making just his third series start, was awarded second place in his initial run at Daytona. Clint Bowyer, the 2005 NASCAR Busch Series runner-up, was third by inches. The Kevin Harvick Inc. duo of Stewart and Lamar worked in unison over the last five laps as Lamar overcame any first-year jitters to push his veteran teammate past the challenges of Bowyer and Michael Waltrip. Stewart had taken the lead from Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Lap 108 and led the final 13 laps of the event, the only laps he led on the day. NASCAR Busch Series regular Jon Wood finished an impressive fourth, while Kevin Harvick the driver, not owner, the 2001 series champion, finished fifth driving for Richard Childress Racing.
Yeley Captures First Career Pole at Daytona
J.J. Yeley snagged the pole position for Saturday’s Hershey's Kissables 300 at the famed Daytona International Speedway. Yeley lapped the 2.5-mile “World Center of Racing” in 49.155 seconds, at an average speed of 183.094 mph, to earn the first pole of his NASCAR career. He was the only driver in the time trail to exceed 183 mph. Yeley, the sophomore Busch Series driver from the Joe Gibbs Racing stable, plans to compete as a rookie in the Nextel Cup Series and run entire schedule for JGR in the No. 18 car along with his Busch duties this season. Aaron Fike will join Yeley on the front row, starting from the outside pole, while Clint Bowyer, who will also run the Busch/Cup double, will roll off from the third position. Johnny Sauter and John Andretti round out the top-five starting positions in the season opening event.
