Ameriquest 300 - Rookie Post-Race Quotes
Where the Raybestos Rookies finished at California:
Lamar 14th
Kluever 27th
Andretti 29th
Leicht 33rd
BURNEY LAMAR IN THE No. 77 DOLLAR GENERAL CHEVROLET WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE AT CALIFORNIA.
Note:
Lamar finished 14th and took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the fifth time this season.
LAMAR: “It was a good run. I owe a lot of it to the team. We didn’t get the car as good as we could have in practice. Fortunately, we had Tony Stewart and Wally Rogers to bounce ideas off of. We come up with a pretty good setup. We were pretty free the whole race. We had good pit strategy and with the whole Dollar General team working hard we were able to sort of get up there at the end.” HOW DID IT PLAY OUT WHERE YOU GOT TRACK POSITION AT THE END OF THE RACE? “We pitted, because we were somewhat running in the back, and we knew that if we pitted with one to go under the last caution that we wouldn’t have to come back in for fuel again.” HOW CLOSE WERE YOU ON FUEL? “I’m sure it’s pretty close because we ran two laps under caution and we knew that if we came back in and topped it off then we’d be good.” IS THAT THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR THAT YOU’VE HAD TO SAVE FUEL TO FINISH A RACE? “Yeah, but there at the end I wasn’t conserving [smiles]. I actually couldn’t get on the gas so it was probably a good thing.” HOW DO YOU DO THAT AND RACE HARD AT THE SAME TIME? “You just lift off a little bit earlier getting into the corner, don’t use as much brake, keep it in high gear under caution, that type of thing.” THIS RUN MUST GIVE YOU CONFIDENCE GOING TO RICHMOND NEXT WEEK. “I wish we could have done a little better. One thing about it, we’ll have a really good car for Richmond next week. We have two good short track cars right now and we’re looking forward to it.” HOW MUCH CAN YOU LEARN FROM A GUY LIKE TONY STEWART DURING A RACE WEEKEND? “Just listening to him talk on the radio and how he talks to his crew is a lot. And that’s sort of what Jeff Burton has helped me with, too. When you work with really good veterans it helps a lot.”
TODD KLUEVER, No. 06 POST-IT/3M FORD: “We had a really good car tonight. The guys did a really good job with our Post-It/3M Ford Fusion. We just got bit there that last pit stop, I guess. We couldn’t make it to the end and we knew it. We decided to stay out as I think a lot of the other Roush cars did, too. Some of those guys were getting pretty good gas mileage, I guess, and just stayed out. It was unfortunate because we had a pretty good car. We had probably a top-10 car and it sure would have been nice to have finished there.”
JOHN ANDRETTI, No. 10 RVs.COM/CAMPING WORLD FORD: “We went into the race with something we never even tried before. We worked on it and got the car better and then we, through lack of experience with working with it. At the end we made it real tight. And then we didn’t pit and who knows when it’s going to go green the rest of the way. So everybody that then did that, they all got bit. We weren’t the only ones. That was the end of the night.”
STEPHEN LEICHT, No. 90 CITIFINANCIAL FORD: “Any time you come to a track you’ve never been to before you learn a lot about the track and how the car needs to be and how it’s supposed to feel because every track requires something different of your car to go fast.” WAS THE CAR TIGHT OR LOOSE? “We fought a little of both tonight. It’s like once we got rid of one problem we had another problem. We started off really, really loose in and off and never, ever got the tight out of the center. One run we were decent in the center. The last time out I think we were the best that we’d been, even though it was too tight. It was a mix and match of aero and chassis setup that we’re trying to figure out right now and they both have to work together. Unfortunately, right now, we have them working against each other. We’ve just got to figure it out.”
