Stater Bros. 300 - California Speedway
Biffle Wins at Fontana for Third Time
Greg Biffle claimed victory in the Stater Bros. 300 at the California Speedway on Saturday evening, posting his third NASCAR Busch Series win at California. Biffle swept the Busch races at the two-mile track in the 2004 season. In his last race here in 2005, he had to settle for the runner-up position behind Carl Edwards. Edwards looked like he could have been on the way to a second consecutive win, but chose to pit from the lead during a late-race caution flag while the leaders stayed out. The caution period was for debris on the track, the debris turned out to be a driver’s glove that may have been tossed out a driver's window in order to bring out the yellow flag. When the green flag flew with 12 laps remaining, Edwards made a spirited charge through the field but ran out of laps and settled for third place. Biffle had checked out on the field as the laps wound down and ran off to a 2.255-second win, the 18th of his Busch Series career. Biffle led the event four times for a total of 52 laps to lead the most laps on the day. His win ended a 21-race winless streak. Biffle’s third victory ties him with teammate Matt Kenseth for the most NASCAR Busch Series wins at California Speedway. This is team-owner Jack Roush’s fifth NBS win in a row at Fontana. Ryan Newman crossed the finish line in the second position, his 17th career top-ten effort in only 25 series starts. Jeff Burton came home in the fourth position, followed by Jamie McMurray in fifth. The top 11 finishing positions were all occupied by Nextel Cup regulars. Rookie Todd Kluever was the highest finishing Busch driver in 12th place.
Edwards Outduels Newman for NBS Pole at California
Carl Edwards outran The Rocketman to secure the pole position for today's Stater Bros. 300 at the California Speedway. Edwards clocked in a lap of 39.433 seconds, at an average speed of 182.588 mph, to win the pole in the season's second race. Edwards, who runs both the Busch Series and Nextel Cup Series full time, started off the season with a 39th-place finish at Daytona. Mr. Qualifying Ryan Newman will start from the outside of row one, after being knocked off the pole by Edwards. This is Newman’s Busch Series debut this season and he ended up being an ‘outsider’ in the top five, as Roush Nextel Cup teammates took four of the five starting positions. Along with Edwards, Greg Biffle qualified in the third position, while Matt Kenseth and Jamie McMurray will start fourth and fifth respectively. McMurray drives a Dodge for Rusty Wallace in the NBS.
