Brewco Motorsports begins its 11th year competing in the NASCAR Busch Series. Brewco is coming off its most solid performance in the series, having placed two cars (No. 27 and No. 66) in the top-ten in points (eighth and tenth respectively) in 2005.
This season Kimberly-Clark begins its 13th year as a sponsor in the NASCAR Busch Series, making it the longest continual team “primary” sponsor in the Series.
Last year at Bristol Motor Speedway, the spring Busch Series race was rain-delayed from Saturday to Monday. The No. 27 Brewco team and Green started in 21st place and finished in 15th.
In 23 starts at Bristol, Green has one win, six top-five and 12 top-10 finishes. His 1994 win at the track was one of the most bizarre finishes in NASCAR history (see the “Looking Back” section below).
For the second week in a row, Kimberly-Clark’s Cottonelle® brand will be featured on the No. 27 Brewco car.
This week’s Associate Sponsor is Food City. Headquartered in Abingdon, Virginia, K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc. is the corporate name of a supermarket chain operating in three states under the name Food City. K-VA-T is an acronym of its trade area: Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, where this privately held, family-owned company has 13, 20 and 59 units respectively. The 92-store chain serves a more than 2.5 million people in 980,000 households.
Looking Back:
To recognize the history of the NASCAR Busch Series, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2006, each week we’ll take a look back into David Green’s 16-year racing history, as it relates to this week’s track:
“No question, one of my most memorable Bristol races was my 1994 victory there when Mark Martin and I had a very odd finish,” said Green.
On April 9, 1994, at what was then called Bristol International Raceway, Martin was leading the Busch Series race when yellow flags came out and it was obvious that the race would end under caution. Martin, thinking he had won, pulled off the track from Turn 4 and headed to Victory Lane. However, there was still one lap to go, and a pleasantly surprised Green took that final lap around the track and made his own trip to Victory Lane. Martin was scored as the 11th place finisher in the official results of the race and Green went on to win the Bush Series Championship that year.
“At Bristol, it’s not over until it’s over,” said Green.
David Green on Bristol:
“Bristol is by far my favorite track and the most exciting race we run all year. Simply put, it’s like flying an airplane in a gymnasium: fast, 250 laps of on the edge, wall-climbing racing! There’s paint swapping and fender banging each and every lap. The strategy is real simple at Bristol - strap in, shut up and hold on, and if you get off the pace by a tick, the other drivers will beat the back bumper off your car and you have to GO!
“I’ve had a lot of good runs at Bristol, with a few poles there and a win. It’s important to qualify well and be up front all day long to get to victory lane. The car has to handle and turn well all day, on every lap. A good-handling car and solid pit strategy will get you good track position and a shot at victory.
“The fans are always second to none at Bristol. If you can’t get excited about a Bristol weekend, then you’re not a race fan…period.”
