Scleroderma Foundation Partners with ppc Racing and Kenny Wallace to Raise Awareness

Kenny Wallace
MOORESVILLE, NC (December 12, 2005) – ppc Racing officials announced today that the Scleroderma Foundation will be an associate sponsor on the #22 AutoZone Ford Fusion driven by Kenny Wallace in the 2006 NASCAR Busch Series. The Scleroderma Foundation first partnered with ppc Racing earlier this year for the Dover 200 on September 24th at Dover International Speedway. The Scleroderma Foundation’s logo will be located on the #22 AutoZone Ford’s b-pillar for the 2006 season.

“We are pleased to expand our partnership with ppc Racing and Kenny Wallace for next season,” said Donna Kohli, President and CEO of the Scleroderma Foundation headquartered in Danvers, Massachusetts. “We wish Kenny Wallace, the #22 AutoZone crew, and the entire ppc Racing team much success as they compete for the 2006 NASCAR Busch Series Championship.”

A partnership with ppc Racing and Kenny Wallace is a terrific way for the Scleroderma Foundation to raise awareness and funds for the fight against Scleroderma, a devastating auto-immune disease that affects over 300,000 people in the United States alone.

“We are very proud that the Scleroderma Foundation has become a part of the ppc Racing family of sponsors, and to join it in its campaign “The Race is On To Find a Cure!” said Greg Pollex, owner of ppc Racing. “Awareness of this cause and its needs is their biggest objective, and we intend to deliver on that goal by putting Kenny Wallace and the #22 AutoZone Ford up front. I hope that all of our fans will visit www.scleroderma.org to learn about this disease, and support those affected by it. Scleroderma affects women four times as often as men, and this initiative reflects our efforts on behalf of our female NASCAR fans.”

About The Scleroderma Foundation. . .
Our mission is three-pronged:

  • to raise funds for research on the cause and treatment of scleroderma
  • to help patients and their families cope with the disease through mutual support programs and hotline assistance
  • to educate patients and their families as well as medical professionals and the public, through medical symposiums, literature, a newsletter, public awareness programs and political advocacy

Unfortunately, as great strides are being made for the treatment and cure of many diseases, scleroderma still remains relatively unknown to the general public. As you may be aware, scleroderma, a devastating autoimmune disease that hardens the skin and often attacks internal organs, affects over 300,000 U.S. citizens. Because it is a disease that receives so little attention, it is important to consider these facts:

  • 80% of scleroderma patients are women between the ages of 25 and 55, frequently during childbearing years, (5,000 to 7,000 children suffer with either the linear or morphea form of pediatric scleroderma)
  • external and internal forms of the disease can cause serious facial changes, disfigurement and even death
  • we do not yet know what causes scleroderma and currently there is no cure
  • annual direct and indirect costs of scleroderma in the United States are $1.5 billion, according to a study abstract published in Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism, and
  • 50 million Americans suffer from an autoimmune disease
