Zippo 200 - Watkins Glen International
Newman Wins at The Glen
Ryan Newman, making just his third NASCAR Busch series start of the season, captured the victory in the rain-delayed Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International on Saturday afternoon. The race was delayed by over two hours because of the rain that cancelled Nextel Cup Series qualifying, then the first 17 laps of the race on the 2.45-mile road course were run under the yellow and green flags at the same time, or the “competition yellow,” to help dry the track. Once the green flag finally flew by its self, teams ducked on to pit road to top off with gas, immediately making this a fuel mileage race and Newman was more than happy to play that game. Newman’s strategy played out perfectly as he made a power move to pass Brain Vickers for the lead with eight laps to go and was able to hold off a hard charging Robby Gordon by 0.846 seconds at the checkered flag to claim his first career road course win. Although Newman had enough fuel to get to the end of the race, he didn’t have enough to make it to victory lane; he ran out of gas on the cool-down lap and used assistance from Gordon to make it to his post-race celebration. The win is the first of the season for Newman, his third top five in three starts in 2005, and the second of his NBS career. Gordon, who was fast all day, finished in the runner-up position, while Vickers ended up in third. Pole-sitter Tony Stewart finished fourth, followed by the Busch points leader Martin Truex Jr. in the fifth position. Vickers led the most laps on the day, leading twice for 24 of the event’s 82 laps, while Newman only led the final eight laps which included the most important one, the final one.
Stewart Wins Zippo 200 Busch Pole at Watkins Glen
To no one’s surprise Tony Stewart continued his recent hot streak with a record-breaking lap at The Glen. Both Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne picked up where they left off last week at Indy but brought it to the NASCAR Busch Series, where they will start one-two for today’s race. Stewart won the pole position for the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International with time of 72.851 seconds, at an average speed of 121.069 mph, to break the track record set by Scott Pruett in 2001. It is Stewart’s second Busch pole of the season and the fourth of his career. Kahne will start from the outside pole position, followed by Robby Gordon in third and Ryan Newman in fourth. Points leader Martin Truex Jr. will start from the fifth position as the highest starting NBS regular. Truex won the first road course event at Mexico earlier this season.
Final Practices Washed Out by Rain
The Nextel Cup and Busch teams got in only one practice session each at Watkins Glen International on Friday afternoon before rain washed out the final practices for both series. Neither practice session will be made up and everything will resume as scheduled on Saturday morning, beginning with NBS qualifying at 9:00 am ET, followed by Cup qualifying at 11:10 am ET.
