Aaron's 312 - Talladega Superspeedway
Truex is Talladega’s Ultimate Survivor
Martin Truex, Jr., you are the ultimate survivor! Despite having to wait out a rain delay that lasted over three hours, a 16-car accident on lap 18 (in which he was involved) that caused a red flag that lasted 17:40, multiple pit stops to repair the damage, avoiding many other wrecks along the way that caused a record number of cautions, driving into darkness, and a green-white-checkered finish, Truex emerged as the winner. Yes, Truex won the Aaron's 312 at Talladega Superspeedway with a car that had been beaten and battered and taped and screwed, he still battled back and drove it to victory lane to score his second series victory this season. It would take Truex until lap 63 to make it to the lead after all of his problems and prove that, despite his troubles, nothing would hold him back. Truex led the most laps on the day, leading three times for 46 laps, particularly since he took the lead at lap 93 and led the remainder of the race, winning by 0.128 seconds. Truex is now batting a cool 1.000 at Talladega, going two-for-two, he has won both Busch events that he has entered. Rookie Jon Wood scored his career-best finish with a second-place effort in his first race at the Talladega track. David Stremme took the checkered flag in third, while Ashton Lewis Jr. and Kerry Earnhardt finished in the top five. The event featured a record-breaking 10 caution flags for a total of 41 laps, including the red flag, only 20 cars were listed as “running” at the end of the race, most were due to accidents. The Aaron's 312 also had 19 lead changes among nine drivers.
Menard Wins Busch Pole at Talladega
Paul Menard led the field during Busch pole qualifying on Thursday, which started in the late afternoon and ended in the early evening. Menard will start from the pole position for Saturday’s Aaron's 312 at Talladega Superspeedway after laying down a qualifying lap in 52.037 seconds, at an average speed of 184.023 mph. It was only Menard’s second Busch Series career qualifying attempt at Talladega and it was his second career pole position. Menard started last week’s event at Phoenix from the second spot. "Front Row Joe" Nemechek, who has five NBS poles at Talladega, qualified on the outside pole position and will join Menard on the front row. Rookie Denny Hamlin will start third, while Martin Truex Jr. and Clint Bowyer round out the top-five starting positions.
