Harvick Claims Emotional Win in Texas, Honors Father-in-Law
Kevin Harvick captured a very emotional victory on Saturday afternoon down in the heart of Texas. Harvick’s father-in-law John Paul Linville passed away earlier this week on November 1st, making for heavy hearts in victory lane. Linville was a former NASCAR Busch Series driver with 136 starts. He most recently worked at Kevin Harvick, Inc. and was extremely close to both Harvick and his crew chief Todd Berrier. Harvick was so emotional in victory lane that he was unable to complete his tearful post-race interview. The win by Harvick ended Ryan Newman’s hopes of a record-setting sixth straight Busch Series win. Although Newman dominated the majority of the race, it was an ill-timed caution flag that did him in, and the cause of the caution just happened to be the other main contender in the race, Kasey Kahne. It was as if Harvick’s win was just meant to be. Newman started from the pole and dominated the race, lapping most of the field and leading four times for 122 of the event’s 200 laps. But it was his decision not to pit on lap 106, while the other 17 cars on the lead lap stopped, that came back to bite him in the end. Newman still ran well on the old tires until he and Kahne had a great battle up front and finally relinquished the lead on lap 135. Kahne would show his strength and lead the next 30 laps with Newman in second. Newman finally had to give up his second-place spot to make a green-flag pit stop on lap 160, putting him a lap down, but stops for the other cars loomed in around 15 laps. But on lap 166, Kahne would have a flat tire and hit the wall while leading, sending him out of the race and Newman to the tail end of the lead lap on the restart. Harvick’s pit crew would get him out of the pits first with a stop under 13 seconds and he used the clean air to lead the final 32 laps on the way to win the race under caution. This is Harvick’s fourth NASCAR Busch Series win of the season, with his other wins coming at Bristol, Chicago and Richmond. The victory is Harvick’s second career win at Texas Motor Speedway and 17th career win in the NBS. Harvick has led at least one lap in 13 of his 19 races this season. Greg Biffle finished in the second position yet again here at Texas, while Carl Edwards came home in third. Reed Sorenson was the highest finishing Busch regular in fourth place, followed by Kyle Busch in fifth. Clint Bowyer finished seventh in the race and gained 16 points on leader Martin Truex Jr., who finished 11th. Truex now leads Bowyer by 84 points with two races remaining.
Newman Sweeps Texas Poles, Guns for Sixth Straight
Ryan Newman swept the pole positions on Friday down in Texas, winning both the NEXTEL Cup and the Busch Series poles within hours of each other. At least he gets to keep this one. Newman won the Cup pole with his speed on his first lap but wrecked on his second lap and will have to start at the rear of the field with a backup car. After that fiasco was over, Newman jumped in his No. 39 Busch car and qualified with a lap of 28.496 seconds, at an average speed of 189.500 mph, to capture his second pole of the day. This is Newman’s third pole of the year and puts him in a four-way tie for the Busch Series lead for most poles on the season. He has already clinched the Bud Pole Award in the NEXTEL Cup Series for the fourth consecutive year. Newman will lead the field to the green flag for the O'Reilly Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway as he guns for his record-setting sixth straight Busch Series victory. David Stremme will give the front row an all-Dodge look, as he will start beside Newman on the outside of row one in the second position. Kevin Harvick will start third, while rookie Jon Wood rolls off fourth. Greg Biffle rounds out the top-five starting positions on the starting grid for the inaugural O'Reilly Challenge.
