RAYBESTOS® ROOKIE CONTENDER QUOTES FOR EMERSON RADIO 250 NASCAR BUSCH SERIES RACE AT RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2005.

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 20 ROCKWELL AUTOMATION CHEVROLET: “We had a good car. On long runs it didn’t seem like there was anybody faster than we were. We haven’t had an engine failure all year long so I’ll definitely take this one in stride and look forward to the next couple of weeks and get in that Cup car soon. You can be disappointed when you run really well and that’s why I’m not really disappointed about this. Had I been running like a bag of crap and then we blew up that would have just been insult to injury. I’m happy about the way the car ran. The car stayed great all night long. I was looking forward to long runs. We were done pitting for the night. Man, we were ready to get us a good top-five.” YOU SAID EARLIER THIS YEAR THAT YOU WERE STRUGGLING ON THE INTERMEDIATE SIZE TRACKS. HAVE YOU MADE ANY PROGRESS? “We’re starting to take a little bit of stuff from the Cup team and starting to apply it. We’ll find out when we go to Kansas here pretty soon whether we get better or not.”

REED SORENSON IN THE No. 41 DISCOUNT TIRE DODGE WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE AT RICHMOND.

Notes:

  • Sorenson finished seventh, his 15th top-10 finish this season. He took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the 14th time in 28 races, more than any other freshman driver.

  • Sorenson became the first Raybestos Rookie to lead a lap in the September race since Kevin Harvick, who led once for one lap in the 2000 event. Sorenson led once for four laps and was the only first-year driver to lead at least a lap.

  • Sorenson is unofficially third in the Busch Series championship standings, 217 behind second place Clint Bowyer and 311 behind leader Martin Truex Jr. He has a 50-point lead on fourth-place Carl Edwards

  • Sorenson became the second consecutive Raybestos Rookie to score a top-10 finish in the fall race at Richmond and seventh since the program was created in 1989. The others:
    1989: Bobby Hamilton, first
    1989: Kenny Wallace, third
    1993: Hermie Sadler, third
    1993: Joe Bessey, eighth
    1994: Johnny Benson, sixth
    1997: Steve Park, first
    1998: Andy Santerre, 10th
    2004: Kurt Busch, fifth

SORENSON: “I think we had a top-five car but seventh isn’t bad. It was a good day for us. We had a good car. It was the best car that we’ve had in a while. We were just behind on track position all night long. We passed a lot of cars and they passed us back and we’d pass them back. I had a really good car. I was really happy with it and I wished we could have got a top-five but we got seventh. That’s not horrible.”

YOU GAINED GROUND IN THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE STANDINGS AND THE BUSCH SERIES POINTS TONIGHT. “It seemed like for a change that somebody else had some bad luck and get in some situations instead of us. It seems like the past month they’ve been the one gaining and gaining on us. It’s nice to finally have a change on that.”

DID THE TRACK STAY CONSISTENT ALL NIGHT? “It was real consistent. We freed it up all night. The track stayed the same and we got the car better. It was the best at the end so you can’t ask for much better than that.”

DID THE CAUTIONS AT THE END OF THE RACE HELP YOU? “I think it hurt us. We had a little problem on restarts. The motor wasn’t running real good on restarts so that didn’t help. The green flag runs were good so I wish we could have had a couple of green flag runs there at the end.”

WHAT DID YOU LEARN IN TWO RACES AT RICHMOND THIS SEASON? “I liked it, I learned that. The first race I think we should have been just as good as we were here, we just got caught up in a situation.”

JON WOOD, No. 47 CLOROX/WISK FORD: “We went a lap down early. We really had a mishandling racecar early on. We bounced back. Starting 37th and finishing 17th I won’t complain. Every time you go to a racetrack like this you get better. You’re racing guys that have been here for 15-20 years so every time you’re here you get better. The car was tight. We battled tight all night long.”

CARL EDWARDS, No. 60 CHARTER COMMUNICATIONS FORD: “We were going to have a real good points night there just racing as hard as I could. J.J. Yeley just got loose underneath me and slid up and knocked us into the fence. That’s how it goes. As frustrated as I am, I know he didn’t do it on purpose. It’s easy to do here and easy to have that happen. I think we finished 27th or something. It would have been a good points night; it’s so frustrating because we had a top-three car.”

THE CREW DID A GOOD JOB TO GET THE CAR BACK ON THE TRACK. “My guys did a great job. These guys are just good at everything. Our car was awesome. We had a pole contending car and man, ‘bout knocked the fence down there and the guys still got it put back together and got it back out on the racetrack. Brad [Parrott, crew chief] was still calling lap times out to me and I said ‘I don’t think I need the lap times, Brad.’ It’s just unfortunate that happened.”

IT LOOKED LIKE YOU GOT THROUGH THE WRECK. “I got real fortunate there a couple of times. We dodged some big wrecks. Everything was going really smoothly and thought ‘You know what, we’ll just get as much as we can here and have a good points day with Martin’s bad luck. I got into one on the outside of the 18 and I had him passed and it’s so easy here, I know he didn’t mean to do it, he just got loose and slid up and took us out. That’s the way it goes. I’ve done the same thing. I know he didn’t mean to do it.”

COMMENT ON MARTIN TRUEX JR’S WILD CRASH ON THE BACKSTRETCH. “That Martin Truex deal was crazy. They said ‘Wreck in front of you’ and I saw sparks and I didn’t see a car. I’m like ‘Where’s the car?’ and then I was like ‘Oh, it’s up against the fence.’ That was pretty crazy. Martin said he never lifted. I kind of know how he feels. Boy, when something happens like that you’re so mad you just act like it’s not happening. That was pretty wild and I’m glad that everybody is OK.”

    SORENSON PRESS CONFERENCE

“We started out and we were good. We came up to around seventh or so in that first caution and then we decided to stay out and we had another long green flag run that we didn’t really want to have. We still stayed in the top-10 and then our second pit stop was not good and lost some more spots there but we had a really good car. We had a top-five car, I think, and we just gained as much as we could there at the end. We passed a couple of guys who were on a little bit older tires than we were. Those cautions there at the end definitely didn’t help. We needed some green flag runs and it seemed like there at the end just kind of like last night in the truck race, there was a caution every couple of laps. I was telling my crew chief, they were on the outside of me and I kind of kind of saw ‘em and I thought they were going to come back down so I was pretty worried about that. All in all it was a good night for us. This is the first time in a while that we’ve gained points on everybody in front of us instead of them gaining a bunch of points on us so it was a good night.”

JIMMY ELLEDGE, CREW CHIEF, No. 41 DISCOUNT TIRE DODGE: “That was a good day. That’s what we needed. We need to get some points for these guys, have a good points day, and that’s what we did. I made some bonehead calls tonight. I’m having a tough time getting used to this Busch stuff. I’m so used to not having to worry about tires on the Cup side. It’s like when I’m trying to be conscious of them I don’t need to be and when I should be I’m not so I’m having a tough time with that.” Reed did a good job. Our car was good. It was probably a little better than where we finished. I think we probably had a top-five car but to finish seventh and make points on everybody tonight, it was a good deal.”

IS THIS A TESTAMENT TO THE DEPTH OF THIS RACE TEAM? “I’m a very, very small part of this thing right now. Brian [Pattie, crew chief] prepares all his cars and all his guys at the shop and he gives me his setup sheet when I leave and says ‘We tried this and this and these other tracks.’ I’m basically just here standing in. They’ve got a terrific race team and our organization has got a lot of depth in it. I’m glad that people perceive it that way because I know some people are perceiving it that they were cheating, soaking tires and stuff and that’s the only reason they’d run good. Hopefully that will put an end to all that.”

HOW MUCH OF A JUGGLING ACT IS THIS FOR JIMMY ELLEDGE? “Long days, man. I don’t think it would be so bad if we had a normal schedule. We’ve come upon a lot of these Saturday races and the night races and that’s tough. At Bristol I went into the garage at 6:30 Friday morning and got back to my motorhome at 3:30 Saturday morning. Got back in the garage at Noon Saturday and got home at 3:30 Sunday morning. Then at California I went back and forth and it seems like the garage opens at opposite ends of the hours in the Busch Series for the Cup Series on all these evening events. I’ve asked John Darby ‘Who’s being punished here?’ Was it me being punished or is it Brian? [laughs]. But with two good race teams, with my Target team and these Discount Tire guys. It makes it easy. It’s just a lot of hours and trying to think ahead and be prepared for both of them.”

HOW SPECIAL IS IT TO RUN WELL WITH THE REED SORENSON TEAM? HOW SPECIAL WOULD IT BE TO WIN A RACE? “I think that’d be great. That’s one of my goals. I feel like I’ve won races in every division, from ARCA, Cup, and Truck and Busch is something that I’ve not won in and this is definitely the best opportunity. I’d really like to be able to make something of it and we’ve got some good tracks coming up for us. We’ve got a test coming up at Kansas that we’ve got to do so I’ll probably have a whole lot more feel for the cars and stuff then after testing with them for two days. I’m looking forward to it and I’d like to get that done to say that I’ve won one in all of them at least.”
