Funai 250 - Clint Bowyer Notes
Huntersville, N.C. (May 10, 2005) – One may think that because a driver has never raced on a certain racetrack before that they may be at a complete disadvantage against the more experienced competition. And in most cases that would be true. But that is certainly not the case for ACDelco driver Clint Bowyer as he has proven to be successful in those circumstances.
This year Bowyer has already been to three racetracks that were unfamiliar to him. The Mexico City, Las Vegas, Nev., and Bristol, Tenn., trips were all new to the 25 year-old. Two of those three races have produced two of his six top-10 finishes this year. This Friday night hopes to be no different for Bowyer as he looks to make his first start at Richmond International Raceway during the running of the Funai 250.
He however, is not totally blind to the 0.75 mile oval. Last week prior to making the trip to Darlington, S.C., Bowyer made a stop in Richmond, Va., for a one day test session that proved to be worthy. “It was my first time ever being there. I think I gained a lot of confidence,” said Bowyer. “It was probably the best learning test I have ever had. I thought we gained a lot from where we began.
“Obviously Richmond is a track where you are racing the cars around you. It is a lot more of a racy racetrack. It is not like Darlington where you race the racetrack all day long to get a good finish. You have to race the cars around you. You are always in traffic and because of that you have to be good in traffic. We haven’t been to a track where you have to race like that in a couple of weeks. We have a good balance between loose and tight and a good car underneath us. It is always different when you go back under race conditions. There is a lot more rubber on the track from all the cars, but I think we are very confident and should be good to go.”

You mentioned the test went well. What did you walk away with?
“You can be on both sides of the fence real easy at Richmond from loose to tight. With the new impound procedures and minimal practice time we get it is hard to work on your set-up. We were able to do that during the test. We worked on our set-up and continually got it better on old tires which is usually the case in practice because you only have one set of tires. You have 50 laps on your tires and you have your chassis and your balance set-up the way you want it. Then nine-times-out-of-10 when you start the race with sticker tires and full fuel you are so loose you can’t drive it. So, we went from there and had time to use another set of tires which we found out we were still too loose. We just kept working on the car to where we had the balance right and the car was fast.”
You haven’t raced there before so, is there another track of comparison that you have been on? Or is the test all you have?
“No, I haven’t raced on anything like it before and that is another reason it was so good to test there. It is a short-track obviously and other than Bristol we haven’t been to another short-track yet. There are more short-tracks to come and we need maintain a good balance between loose and tight with the car underneath us.”
