Funai 250 - Richmond International Raceway
Edwards Uses Exciting Last-Lap Pass to Win RIR
Well it was Friday the 13th under the lights at Richmond, there had been a 13-minute red flag earlier in the race and the 13th caution flag flew to set up an exciting finish, in which Carl Edwards would emerge as the victor. Virginia native Elliott Sadler had the lead as the laps were winding down with Edwards steadily reeling him in until the 57 and 14 cars got together in turn two, bringing out the caution flag and sending the race into overtime. The race would end with a green-white-checkered finish, with Sadler able to hold off Edwards for the first lap but, just past the start/finish line, Edwards ducked underneath Sadler, the two cars made contact, Sadler got sideways and saved it but fell back to second, while Edwards went on to take the checkered flag. Edwards led only one lap in tonight’s race, the only one that counts, he has led at least one lap in seven races this season. Clint Bowyer led the most laps during the evening, leading the event three times for a total of 66 laps. The victory is Edward’s second Busch Series win of the season, his other win came at Atlanta Motor Speedway where he also won the Nextel Cup Series race the following day. Edwards now has 10 top-10 finishes, including five top fives, in 12 races this season and he has led the Busch Series point standings since his win at Atlanta. Sadler finished .144 seconds behind Edwards in the second position, while Johnny Sauter finished third. Kasey Kahne, who started from the pole, ended the night in fourth and Greg Biffle finished fifth.
Kahne Wins Busch Pole at Richmond
Kasey Kahne, making the debut of Ray Evernham’s No. 79 Dodge Charger in the Busch Series, grabbed the pole position for the Funai 250 at Richmond International Raceway to be run later this evening. Kahne qualified for the event in 20.934 seconds, at an average speed of 128.977 mph, to earn his second Busch Pole of the season and the fifth of his career in the NASCAR Busch Series. His first pole of the season came at Phoenix where he finished 28th. Kahne is starting from the pole for the second consecutive NASCAR Busch Series race at Richmond International Raceway, he finished ninth in last September’s race. Kahne has never won a Busch Series race from the pole, in his two career victories; he has started ninth (at Homestead in 2003) and 25th (this season at Texas). Clint Bowyer will start on the outside pole, while Jeff Green and Martin Truex make out row number two.
