ITT Industries, Systems Division and Gould’s Pumps Salute to the Troops 250 presented by Dodge - Pikes Peak International Raceway
Bowyer Dominates, Green Charges to Win at Pikes Peak
David Green drove to his first NASCAR Busch Series victory of the season, in a thrilling finish Saturday in the ITT Industries Systems Division and Gould Pumps Salute to the Troops 250 presented by Dodge at Pikes Peak International Raceway. Green, the 1994 NASCAR Busch Series champion and driver of the No. 27 Kleenex Ford, made an incredible charge from fourth to first in the final 10 laps, taking the lead from Bowyer as the two raced towards the white flag in turn four. Green outran Bowyer by 0.572 seconds to capture the much-needed win in his 342nd career NBS start. It was Green’s first NASCAR Busch Series victory since Oct. 2003 and the ninth of his career. Bowyer had the dominant car for the majority of the race, leading 100 of the first 101 laps and leading three times for 152 of the race's 250 total laps. The final two laps, however, belonged to Green. He becomes the eighth different winner in eight NASCAR Busch Series events held at Pikes Peak. The veteran driver Green, who had started the race 14th, was running in the fifth position when the field was restarted with 25 laps remaining. Green slipped ahead of fourth-running Wallace and bided his time while Truex and Yeley battled for the third spot. With 10 laps to go, Truex could not keep his car low enough on the race track and Green passed him to take over the third spot. Almost immediately, Green challenged Yeley for second and was quickly chasing Bowyer for the lead. As the pair rounded turn four, Green passed underneath and went on to victory, his first top-five finish of the season. Bowyer would settle for the runner-up position, followed by Kenny Wallace in third. Points leader Martin Truex Jr. finished in fourth and J.J. Yeley ended his day in fifth place.
Bowyer on Top of Starting Grid at the Peak
Clint Bowyer grabbed the top starting position for what has to be the longest event name in Busch Series history at Pikes Peak International Raceway on Friday afternoon, winning the Busch pole for the “ITT Industries Systems Division & Goulds Pumps Salute to the Troops 250 presented by Dodge”. Whew what a mouthful. Bowyer clocked in a qualifiying lap of 26.944 seconds, at an average speed of 133.610 mph, to give him his first pole position of the 2005 season and the second of his Busch Series career. His first came at Talladega in April of the 2004 season. Bowyer, who sits second in the series championship standings, is looking to improve on his efforts just a bit from last season when he started 10th and finished fourth at Pikes Peak International. With the pole at the Peak, Bowyer now has a top-10 start in four of his last five races. Johnny Sauter will join Bowyer on the front row after qualifying his Dodge in the second position. Everyone’s favorite part-time driver Bill Elliott joined the Busch field at Pikes Peak for his third NBS start of the season and ironically will start from the third position. Paul Menard will roll off from the fourth position, while Elliott’s old Cup teammate Casey Atwood will start on his bumper from the fifth spot.
