Bashas' Supermarkets 200 - Phoenix International Raceway
Biffle Survives to Win Inaugural Night Race at Phoenix
Greg Biffle continued his remarkable hot streak on Friday night, winning the Busch Series Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. Biffle, who dominated the Nextel Cup event in Texas last week, was able to carry over that momentum to be as equally in command of the race on Friday night. Biffle was able to survive the record-number 14 caution flags, in fact he was the cause of the first one when he spun by himself on lap number eight, to win his first Busch race of the season. Biffle led over half of the race, leading twice for a total of 112 of the event’s 200 laps and would to begin to pull away from the field before being forced to restart due to the many, many cautions. Finally, in the end, Biffle ended the night with a margin of victory of 1.969 seconds to capture his second win at Phoenix International Raceway and his 17th career win. Biffle, the 2002 NASCAR Busch Series champion, last won in the Busch Series in September of 2004 at the California Speedway. Elliott Sadler finished in the second position, while Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart came home in the fourth and fifth positions respectively. David Stremme wrecked the Nextel Cup invasion by crashing their party with a solid third-place finish, as the highest finishing Busch Series regular. In fact, of the top-eight positions, only Stremme won’t be racing in the Nextel Cup race on Saturday night.
Kahne Roars to Phoenix Busch Series Pole
Kasey Kahne picked up where he left off last week in the NASCAR Busch Series, at the front of the field. After winning last week’s NBS event at Texas Motor Speedway, the 25-year-old Kahne backed up that feat by winning the pole position for tonight’s Bashas' Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. Kahne, driving the No. 6 Ragu Dodge for Nextel Cup owner Ray Evernham, turned in a qualifying lap of 27.254 seconds, at an average speed of 132.091 mph, the only driver to exceed 132 mph. The pole is Kahne’s first of the season and the fourth of his career in the NASCAR Busch Series. Paul Menard will start from the second spot, while Tony Stewart and J.J. Yeley make out row two on the starting grid.
