New England 200 - New Hampshire International Speedway
Truex Captures Hometown Victory at New Hampshire Track
Martin Truex Jr. became the 19th different NASCAR Busch Series driver to win at New Hampshire International Speedway. The Mayetta, N.J. native claimed his fifth victory of the season on the 1.058 mile track he calls home. Truex, the defending Busch Series champion, took the lead from rookie Denny Hamlin with 13 laps to go then held off a hard-charging Carl Edwards by 0.168 seconds to win in a in a green-white-checker finish. The New England 200 was red flagged on lap 187 for 12 minutes due to oil clean up that stemmed from an incident between Ashton Lewis Jr. and Tony Raines. Kevin Harvick, the 2001 NBS champion, started from the pole and had the dominant car in the early stages, leading the most laps in the event, leading two times for a total of 90 laps. While Truex only led one time, leading the final 13 laps which included the most important one, the final one. Pit strategy played into the hands of Denny Hamlin as he took the lead from Nextel Cup Series driver Elliott Sadler on lap 128 when Reed Sorenson spun out. Carl Edwards would finish in the runner-up position, while Hamlin would score his career-best finish with a third-place effort. Nextel Cup regulars Elliott Sadler and Jamie McMurray would finish fourth and fifth respectively. The win, the 11th career trip to victory lane for Truex, boosted him over the one-million dollar mark in winnings for the season, he now has earned $1,016,657 in the first 20 races of 2005. The race featured six lead changes among six drivers and a whopping 13 caution flags for a total of 49 laps and two red flags.
Harvick Wins New Hampshire Busch Pole
Kevin Harvick picks up right where he left off last weekend, right at the front of the NASCAR Busch Series field. Backing up his win last week at Chicagoland, Harvick won the pole position for today’s New England 200 at New Hampshire International Speedway with a qualifying lap of 29.223 seconds, at an average speed of 130.336 mph. It is Harvick’s second pole of the season for the 2001 Busch Series champion and he was very close to his own track qualifying record that he set during his championship season. Johnny Sauter will start from the outside pole position after qualifying in the second position. Elliott Sadler will roll off from the third spot, while Kasey Kahne and Martin Truex Jr. round out the top five on the starting grid.
