Raybestos ROOKIE CONTENDER QUOTES FOR THE KROGER 200 NASCAR BUSCH SERIES RACE AT INDIANAPOLIS RACEWAY PARK, AUGUST 6, 2005.

REED SORENSON IN THE No. 41 DISCOUNT TIRE COMPANY DODGE WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE AT IRP. Notes: Sorenson finished third, his 10th top-five and 14th top 10 of the 2005 season. He took Raybestos Rookie honors for the 12th time this season. Sorenson won the pole at IRP, his second pole in 28 career starts.

More Notes:

  • At least one Raybestos Rookie has finished in the top 10 in 22 of the 23 Busch Series races this season.
  • TWO or more Raybestos Rookies have ranked in the top 10 in Busch Series championship standings after each of the 24 races this year.
  • A Raybestos Rookie has finished in the top five in four of the past five races at IRP. The others: Kyle Busch (first in 2004), Johnny Sauter (fourth in 2002) and Greg Biffle (second in 2001).

Sorenson was the only Raybestos Rookie to lead a lap in the Kroger 200. He led once for 49 laps.

REED SORENSON, No. 41 DISCOUNT TIRE DODGE: "The two guys in front of me in points finished right there in front of me. If you're going to lose to them you might as well be right behind them. Martin had a really good car and so did Clint. That's the best that we had our car all weekend here so I can't be disappointed with that." DID THE TRACK CHANGE A LOT AFTER THE RAIN? "I don't think so, not really as far as the balance of the car. Our balance was pretty much the same. I don't think it changed too much." ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE FINISH? "I'm happy. You always want to win but anytime you can get a top-three or top-five it's always a good day." WAS TRAFFIC TOUGH HERE TONIGHT? "Yeah, it's really hard to pass. Even lap cars, when you come up onto them, it's really hard to work around those guys. You've just got to be real careful around them."

BRIAN PATTIE, CREW CHIEF, No. 41 DISCOUNT TIRE DODGE: "If someone had told me Monday that we would have sat on the pole and finished third, I would have happily paid them off [smiles]. He did an excellent job. To come back to our first event last year together, yeah, it means a lot." WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO CHASE DOWN MARTIN TRUEX JR.? "Just don't mess up. We have12 more races to not have any DNFs and not have anything stupid happen or when something happens you've got to be able to make something out of nothing like they did last week until they had a loose wheel. That's what we've been doing all year: thriving on our no DNFs and building top-notch racecars that stay together the whole race. It's going like it shaped up to be in the first of the year. It's a three-car battle. It seems like we're pulling away from fourth and fifth. We're starting to focus down on two cars, and that's the 2 and the 8." DID THE RAIN TIGHTEN UP THE TRACK TONIGHT? "You know, he didn't really say much about that. Our car was a little bit tight there in the beginning of the race so I don't know if it was rain related or just the chassis setup. It's just typical of here: tight in the center, loose off, and track position is everything. The 8 car got out there up front and took and that's basically where we finished but all in all, it was a good night. I really appreciate all the hard work the guys had and Reed drove a hell of a race." DID YOU THINK THAT YOU WOULD BE CHASING A CHAMPIONSHIP WHEN YOU AND REED MADE YOUR FIRST START TOGETHER ONE YEAR AGO? "That's why I came here. I expected it. I'm pretty modest and I'm a realist, too. It takes a lot of hard work and a lot of things have to go your way. We structured some strategies in some test sessions to try to help us out to win a championship. Reed and Carl and going to be a good Raybestos Rookie battle, too, so we've got a couple of battles to watch. This is why I came here, to live through the last 12 races fighting for a championship and see how it feels."

CARL EDWARDS, No. 60 CHARTER COMMUNICATIONS FORD: "We fought from the back and we were looking pretty good there for a while. We just got caught up in that wreck. We were in a position where we gambled and took tires and thought we were going to go to the front and I think we would have. I think it would have paid off for a top-five or sixth. I was lucky to get to finish. We finished 20th and that thing was wrecked. It's not the end of the world. It's just a race. We've got to come back and do it again next week."

KERTUS DAVIS, No. 0 RACEGIRL CHEVROLET: "We finished. I was hoping to come here and run in the top-10 all night. I've run here twice before in a Busch car and a Hooters Pro Cup car and thought I learned a lot. I've been learning a lot throughout the whole season I'm a little disappointed but I've got what I've got. I've got to thank RACEGIRL Motorsports for giving me the opportunity. Hopefully by the end of the year I'll be making a big announcement and I'll be in one of these cars running up front."

BRENT SHERMAN, No. 10 SERTA/HICKORY FARMS FORD: "To be honest with you I thought it was going to be worse. We didn't have the car dialed in the way that I felt like it needed to be for the race and we just didn't give up on it. Some other people had some bad luck and we just hung tough and made some good calls with pit strategy. We got the lucky dog and it all equaled out to a top-20, an 18th-place finish. I guess I'm pretty happy with that. It's a step in the right direction. We've got some new cars coming through for some of the speedways and Michigan and Watkins Glen. I'm just glad to have this little stretch over with. We brought some drop-snouts to the racetrack and I don't know if it was the right call in certain circumstances, but I'm looking forward to running some new cars and getting to some tracks that I've been to in the past. This is the last track on the schedule that I haven't seen before. Now we're going to go back to some tracks that I have some laps on and hopefully that will benefit the whole program and the whole team and we can get some good finishes."

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 20 ROCKWELL AUTOMATION CHEVROLET: "It wasn't bad, from where we started the day. We qualified seventh and by the first stop we were 14th, 15th or something like that. We knocked the wall down and knocked the front end all out of whack. To come back for a sixth-place finish is really good for us. It's a good momentum builder. We're going to Michigan to test Monday and Tuesday and get our speedway package a little bit better and hopefully we'll have a good end to the season." AT WHAT POINT DO YOU BUILD UP CONFIDENCE AND ARE COMFORTABLE IN THIS SERIES? "I've gotten to a point where I'm very comfortable in the car. I feel like I can drive it just as hard as the car can be driven. I don't think there is anything left out there with me being a Raybestos Rookie. We just get our cars a little bit better and we'll be battling for the win." CAN YOU TELL THAT YOU ARE MAKING IMPROVEMENTS TO THE CARS? "Definitely. It seems like we just keep getting better and better. When bad things don't happen, we get good solid top-10 finishes. That's what we need to do: solid top 10s every single week."
