Ford 300 - Homestead-Miami Speedway
Newman Wins Homestead, Truex Wins Busch Series Title
Ryan Newman captured the trophy for winning the season-ending race at Homestead, while Martin Truex Jr. hoisted the 2005 Busch Series championship trophy. Newman won the Ford 300 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway after starting from the pole position. Newman and Greg Biffle, who started second, waged a battle for the ages throughout the race, as the two battled many laps side-by-side, fighting for the lead. The Homestead track was redesigned two years ago with progressive banking to promote just the type of racing that went on at the front on the field today. Biffle led the most laps on the day but only by 12 laps over Newman. Biffle led five times for a total of 79 laps, while Newman led five times for 67 laps. Biffle had built a lead of nearly two seconds when Brent Sherman’s accident in turn four brought out the caution flag with five laps to go. The race would go green on lap 197 and Newman would get an excellent restart and blow by Biffle and hold on to win by 0.137 seconds. It is Newman’s sixth victory of the season and the seventh of his career. Newman has now won six of his last seven Busch Series races. The win is Newman’s second from the pole; the other was at Dover in the fall. In nine races this season, Newman tied for the series lead in wins (six) and poles (four). Biffle had the settle for the runner-up position, finishing second for the eighth time in 27 races this season. Mark Martin finished in the third position, followed by Kevin Harvick in fourth. Paul Menard was best in class in fifth place as the highest finishing Busch Series regular. Martin Truex Jr. ended the 2005 season in seventh, with Clint Bowyer right behind him in eighth, giving him his second consecutive Busch Series championship. Truex had to overcome many mishaps this weekend to survive and win the title; from wrecking in qualifying, to losing a lap after a green-flag pit stop for a vibration in the race. Truex fought back from everything that was thrown his way and he was also helped by Bowyer running what he proclaimed his “worst race of the year.” Truex becomes the fifth driver to win back-to-back NBS championships and the first since Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 1998 and 1999.
Newman Grabs Final NBS Pole of the Season
While Ryan Newman won the pole position for today's Ford 300 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway, the season finale, points leader Martin Truex Jr. hit the wall during the time trial and will have to go to a backup car for the race. Newman’s qualifying lap was clocked in at 30.937 seconds, at an average speed of 174.548 mph, to capture his fourth pole of the season in only his ninth Busch Series start. Already having clinched the Bud Pole Award in the NEXTEL Cup Series for the fourth straight year, the top start will put Newman in a tie for the series lead with Carl Edwards with four Busch poles. Greg Biffle will join Newman on the front row of the starting grid after qualifying in 30.974 seconds, at an average of 174.340 mph. Kasey Kahne and Edwards will start from row two, qualifying third and fourth respectively, while Jon Wood will roll off from the fifth position. Truex will start 42nd in his backup car after smacking the wall during his qualifying run, while second-place Clint Bowyer will start 12th.
