Wallace Family Tribute 250 presentend by Shop 'n Save - Gateway International Raceway
Sorenson Wins in First Trip to Gateway
With a sellout crowd on hand for the Wallace Family Tribute 250 at Gateway International Raceway, it was only fitting that a Wallace brother would be in the spotlight. At the same time as 19-year-old rookie Reed Sorenson claimed the second victory of his young NASCAR Busch Series career, it was St. Louis native Mike Wallace who stole the show with a second-place finish in the race honoring him and his two siblings, while brothers Kenny and Rusty finished 24th and 37th, respectively. Sorenson led the event twice for a total of 60 laps, acquiring the five bonus points for leading the most laps in the event, on his way to victory lane. In the end, Sorenson outdistanced Wallace by 0.710 seconds at the checkered flag in his first ever race at Gateway. Another Missouri native, Carl Edwards, rebounded for a third-place finish after starting in the back of the field due to an engine change. David Green, the 1994 NASCAR Busch Series champion, backed up his win last week with a fourth-place finish and moved up to seventh in the Busch Series championship standings. With his fifth-place run, Paul Menard recorded his sixth top-10 finish in his last seven races. With his win, Sorenson remains in third place in the Busch Series point standings, but is now just 84 points behind point-leader Martin Truex Jr. Sorenson’s average winning speed was 103.318 mph while the race totaled 2 hours, 25 minutes and 11 seconds. The event featured ten lead changes among seven drivers and totaled seven cautions for a total of 36 laps.
Truex Takes the Pole for Tonight's Event at Gateway
Defending NASCAR Busch Series champion Martin Truex Jr. won the pole position for tonight’s Wallace Family Tribute 250 at Gateway International Raceway. Truex broke his own track record that he set last season with a fast qualifying lap of 33.328 seconds, at an average speed of 135.021 mph, to earn his second pole in a row at Gateway. Although he is the points leader and has won five times this season, this is Truex’ first pole of 2005. Rookie phenom Reed Sorenson will join Truex on the front row, starting from the second position, while another rookie in Denny Hamlin will start third. Carl Edwards qualified his car in the fourth position but is headed to the rear of the starting grid due to an engine change that was made on No. 60 car. Part-timer Brandon Miller rounded out the top-five on the starting grid. In the tribute to the Wallace brothers, Mike Wallace qualified 18th, while Rusty qualified 23rd and youngest brother Kenny Wallace will start 25th.
