Stacy Compton Quotes
On Darlington: “There are a lot of different strategies for Darlington, like making the car fast for Turns 1 and 2 or concentrating on Turns 3 and 4, but I have a different approach. My strategy is to respect the entire racetrack. You’re looking for a balance there, and after that you must show the track the respect she deserves. It’s one of the few places where you really have to race the track, not the other competitors. You never drop your guard. Darlington will get you, even on your best day. You just hope it’s not today. That’s why it’s one of the greatest racetracks on our sport.”
On the season: “We passed the frustrating point a long time ago. We’ve never had better race cars, but we just can’t get any racing luck. We were in the 17-car crash at Talladega – another crash where we were the victim of somebody else’s mistake. We just can’t buy a break. The one thing we can take out of it, though, is we had moved up 22 positions in the first 17 laps and this Kingsford/Bush’s Baked Beans crew never gave up. We gained 17 positions in the final rundown by fixing the car and returning to the race. That’s a gain of 51 points. We had a great car before the crash, and we proved again we have a great race team after the wreck. As long as you have that working for you, things have to get better.”
Crew Chief Chris Rice Quote
On Darlington: “You go to Darlington knowing you’re not going to be perfect. Turns 1 and 2 are a lot different than Turns 3 and 4 because the track is shaped like a giant egg. You want to find something that makes you competitive at both ends. It’s all about making a compromise.”
