Diamond Hill Plywood 200 - Darlington Raceway
Kenseth Wins at Darlington Under the Lights
Matt Kenseth finally turned his luck around and found victory lane, this time in the Busch Series in the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 at the famed Darlington Raceway… under the lights. Kenseth, who started 24th on Friday night, won his first Busch race of the season in his fifth series start of 2005, his last series victory came on Oct. 30, 2004 at Atlanta. The win is Kenseth’s second Busch Series win at ‘The Lacy in Black,’ he won the spring race here in 1999. This was Kenseth’s 18th Busch Series career victory in 167 races, tying him for 10th on the all-time series win list with Greg Biffle. Kenseth, the 2003 Cup Series champion, has three top five and five top-10 finishes in five Busch Series races in 2005. Kenseth led the 147-lap event twice for a total of 50 laps, earning him the bonus for leading the most laps during the race. Kenseth was able to hold off all competitors and win by a margin of 0.342 seconds over Kenny Wallace in second place. Wallace also led the event once for 12 laps, laps 84-95. Defending Busch champion Martin Truex Jr. finished in the third position, while Greg Biffle and Jeff Burton finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Johnson Wins First Busch Series Pole at Darlington
Jimmie Johnson never really had a stellar Busch Series career but that never hampered him from being one of the best drivers in the Nextel Cup Series, and current points leader. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Johnson won his first career NBS pole position on Friday in his 74th series start, capturing the top starting spot for the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 at Darlington Raceway. His last Busch Series start was March 19 in Atlanta when he started third and finished third. This is Johnson’s fourth career Busch start at Darlington, his previous best start was eighth on September 1, 2001, in which he also captured his best finish of 16th at Darlington. The No. 5 car that Johnson put on the pole has been driven by several different drivers this season. Brian Vickers will start from the outside pole position, while Robert Pressley, making his first start of the season will start third. Sterling Marlin and Shane Hmiel will round out the top-five starting positions.
