2005 Busch Series Points Race: The Top Three Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidates are in the Top Five.
1st place Martin Truex Jr. finished sixth at Bristol and lost 10 points of his lead. He has finished in the top 10 in 16 of the last 18 races. He was fourth at Michigan, fifth at Watkins Glen and won his sixth race of 2005 at IRP. He has won at: Mexico, Talladega, Dover, Daytona 2, Loudon and IRP. 15 races ago, Truex was 318 behind first, in fourth place. Average 2005 finish, 10.2. In three California NBS races, he has one top 10, sixth, (9/04). He finished 30th in the first 2005 NBS California race.
2nd place (-194) Clint Bowyer finished fourth at Bristol and gained 10 points on first place. It was his first top 10 in three races. He was 30th at Michigan, losing 82 points to first place. Bowyer finished 15th at Watkins Glen, ending a streak of consecutive top 10 finishes at three. He was second at IRP, eighth at Gateway, and second, from the pole, at Pikes Peak. He has eight top fives and 16 top 10s in 2005. Average 2005 finish, 10.8. He finished fourth in the February California, his first race at the track.
Head to Head
3rd place (-344) Reed Sorenson finished 11th at Bristol after starting 42nd due to being designated a DNS in qualifying. It was his third race without a top 10. He was 36th (engine) at Michigan, his second consecutive finish worse than 35th and his fifth finish worse than 30th this season. He had his worst finish of 2005 at Watkins Glen, 41st (engine), ending a streak of consecutive top 10 finishes at three. He has 14 top 10 finishes in 2005 and 16 top 10 finishes in 27 races. Average 2005 finish, 12.9. Sorenson finished fifth in the February NBS California race, his first event at the track.
4th place (-425) Carl Edwards finished 29th at Bristol. He has finished outside the top 10 in four of the last five races. He was third at Michigan, 11th at Watkins Glen, 20th at IRP and third at Gateway, his ninth top five and 14th top 10 of 2005. Edwards did not compete at Nashville and lost the lead in the standings. He has two poles and three wins in 2005 (Atlanta, Richmond, Kentucky). Average 2005 finish, 12.7. He finished sixth in the February California, his first race at the track.
5th place (-574) Denny Hamlin finished 13th at Bristol and gained a position in the standings to his best NBS ranking. He was eighth at Michigan, 33rd at Watkins Glen, and sixth at IRP. Hamlin has one top five (third, Loudon) and eight top 10s. Average finish, 14.4. He finished 18th in the February California, his first race at the track.
Kenny Wallace finished 35th at Bristol, his fifth consecutive finish outside the top 10 and dropped out of the top five.
