USG Durock 300 - Clint Bowyer Notes

CLINT BOWYER
Rolling Momentum into USG Durock 300

Huntersville, N.C. (July 6, 2005) – ACDelco driver Clint Bowyer’s first trip to Chicagoland (Ill.) Speedway was anything but enjoyable. It was actually weird to be exact. The Emporia, Kan., native made an attempt in Andy Petree’s No. 33 Monaco Coaches Chevrolet, but only completed 17 laps of the scheduled 200 in the NASCAR Busch Series event before problems with the rear end brought him to a halt. Nonetheless, he greatly appreciated the opportunity and now looks forward to revisiting the 1.5-mile oval in the No. 2 ACDelco Chevrolet for Saturday’s running of the USG Durock 300.

“My first trip to Chicago was pretty short,” recalled Bowyer. “But no matter what, I am still very appreciative of the opportunity Andy Petree gave me. The car was spinning out loose and we tried to fix it several times, but we were still two seconds off the pace. We just couldn’t seem to put a finger on it. It was a weird deal, but like I said I can’t thank Andy enough for the opportunity. I just wish I could have made more laps.”

This time the 26-year old returns to Joliet, Ill., in the No. 2 ACDelco Chevrolet, a car he hasn’t had much of a problem turning laps in this year. After 18 races in the 2005 season, Bowyer has completed 3263 of 3317 laps (98%) and has led 160 (9%). With one win, five top-five and 11 top-10 finishes, Bowyer is back to second in the NASCAR Busch Series points standings, 71 markers behind reigning NBS champion Martin Truex, Jr.

“We haven’t tested at Chicago this year, so we are pretty much winging it,” said Bowyer. “But I ran at Kansas Speedway last year, and even though I only ran 17 laps at Chicago, I did get some seat time on it. I think everything will be alright. We have been really consistent this year, and if everything falls into place this weekend, I don’t see any reason why things will be any different. I am really looking forward to keeping this momentum rolling.”

Points of Interest…

  • Runnin’ It…The Real Car Guys will take chassis No. 039 to the Windy City this weekend. They have run this chassis once this season. It brought home a sixth place finish after starting 29th at Texas Motor Speedway in April.
  • Track Stat…Bowyer has raced once at Chicagoland Speedway. His first start came on July 10, 2004, in the No. 33 Monaco Coaches Chevrolet of Andy Petree. He started 40th and finished 42nd after problems with the rear end put him in the garage early.
  • Sponsor Stat…ACDelco’s only trip to Victory Lane at the 1.5-mile oval came on July 13, 2002, with Johnny Sauter behind the wheel. Sauter started 20th and led 48 laps on his way to giving ACDelco their only victory there.
  • NBS Points…After 18 races in the 2005 season, Bowyer is back to second in the points standings. He’s now 71 markers out of the lead with one win, five top-five and 11 top-10 finishes.
  • Media Opp…Bowyer will be available outside the No. 2 ACDelco hauler for 30 minutes to field any questions from the media after the first NBS practice on Thursday, approximately from 4:05 p.m. to 4:35 p.m. This exercise will be in effect for the remainder of the year. A reminder will be in each advance updating time and location.
  • Start time…Saturday afternoon’s USG Durock 300 is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. EDT. TV coverage of the 200-lap event on NBC begins at 2:00 p.m., with live radio coverage also beginning at 2:00 p.m. EDT on your local MRN Radio affiliate and XM Satellite Radio – channel 144. No. 2 ACDelco driver Clint Bowyer on Chicagoland Speedway…

ACDelco went to Victory Lane at Chicago in 2002 with Johnny Sauter. How much would you like to get them back there on Saturday?
“Oh, I would absolutely love to put the ACDelco Chevy back in the Winner’s Circle. We have been running really consistent, but we are going to need to make it back to Victory Lane a couple of more times to close in on Martin Truex, Jr. and the championship.”

Is Martin Truex, Jr. your biggest threat at this point?
“I would say so. Out of the top-four drivers in points right now, he has been the one on a roll. That’s not to say that Carl (Edwards) and Reed (Sorneson) can’t rebound back. But Truex, Jr. is the only one in front of us, so that is the only one we care about at this point. There is still some meat left in the season, so as long as we continue to take care of business, I think a couple more wins will come and we can continue to close in on this championship.”
