USG Durock 300 - Chicagoland Speedway
Newman Dominates, Harvick Wins the NBS Race at Chicago
Ryan Newman had the dominant car on the day, leading 118 of 200 laps, but failed to regain track position after being penalized for having an extra man over the wall with just over 40 laps to go and Kevin Harvick took advantage of a flawless restart following a caution with six laps to go to take the checkered flag in Saturday’s USG DUROCK 300 NASCAR Busch Series race at Chicagoland Speedway.
Harvick, the 2001 NASCAR Busch Series champion, thrilled the sellout crowd of 75,000 as he managed to hold off Greg Biffle and hard-charging Ryan Newman in the race’s final 10 laps following a caution caused by Jimmie Johnson, who lost a left front tire.
Martin Truex Jr., the defending NASCAR Busch Series champion, finished seventh, and stayed atop the championship standings. Clint Bowyer, Harvick’s Richard Childress Racing teammate, remained in second while Raybestos rookie Reed Sorenson stayed in third.
Harvick took the lead for good with under 30 laps to go when he blew past Sorenson just a half-lap after a restart thanks to Jeff Green’s expired engine.
Chicago is Harvick’s kind of place – he won the first two NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series races at the 1.5-mile track and now adds his first NASCAR Busch Series victory there following top-five finishes in 2001 and 2004.
The win was Harvick’s 15th in the NASCAR Busch Series and his second of the season; he also won at Bristol earlier this year.
Newman Shatters Track Record on His Way to Busch Pole
Ryan Newman wasn’t about to be denied twice. After being knocked off the Nextel Cup pole by Jimmie Johnson earlier in the day, Newman clobbered the Busch field in the qualifying session and smashed the track-qualifying record in the process, gving him the top starting position for the USG Durock 300 at Cicagoland Speedway. Newman’s record-breaking lap was timed in at 28.964 seconds, at an average speed of 186.438 mph, and was .227 seconds and 1.449 mph ahead of Kasey Kahne, who will join Newman on the front row. Kyle Busch will roll off from the third position, followed by J.J. Yeley in fourth and Kevin Harvick in fifth. When you click on the ‘Starting Lineup’ link below for this Busch Series race at Chicago, please do not use our Contact form to let us know that we messed up and put the Nextel Cup lineup where the Busch lineup should be, it is right, believe us, it is right. Although it is hard to tell with 12 Nextel Cup regulars sitting in the top-14 positions and six other Buschwhackers throughout the field. Now you have a total of 18 Nextel Cup regulars in a Busch Series race that ended up sending a lot of Busch regulars home and the defending champion of this race, Justin Labonte barely got in at all with the 40th position, making the race on owner points.
