Food City 250 - Bristol Motor Speedway

Newman "Reigns" in Bristol, Scores Third Straight NBS Win
Ryan Newman reigns in the rains at Thunder Valley. Bristol Motor Speedway has a nickname of Thunder Valley for a reason but not for the reason we saw on Friday evening when the thunder brought rain, and plenty of it, (and something else brought 12 cautions) but through it all, Ryan Newman emerged as the victor of the Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway, his third successive Busch win. Pole sitter Kyle Bush led the first 63 laps until Reed Sorenson brought out the night’s third caution when he spun in turn four on lap 63. While the race was still under caution, the rain hit the track and the first of two red flags was shown, stopping the race on lap 72, the delay lasted a total of 1 hour, 32 minutes and 12 seconds. Once the race finally resumed on lap 86, David Stremme had the lead but once lap 140 came rolling around Newman was in the lead and looking very comfortable there. On lap 164, the second red flag would fly, stopping the event for the second time for a total of 26 minutes and 10 seconds, pushing the red-flag delay total to one hour, 58 minutes and 22 seconds. For the remainder of the race nothing changed up front, except the fact that Newman’s No. 39 Dodge grew wider and wider even as faster cars tried but could not pass him. It seemed that the caution flags would fall at the end just when Newman’s competitors were mounting a charge to pass him and that was what he needed to continue his streak and score a 0.273-second win, his fourth NASCAR Busch Series victory. His streak started at Watkins Glen and continued last week at Michigan. Newman led the most laps in the event, including leading the final 112 laps. Six drivers have won three NASCAR Busch Series races in a row seven times. The last driver to accomplish the feat was Dale Earnhardt Jr. in June, 1999 at Dover, South Boston and Watkins Glen. The series record is four in a row set by Sam Ard in 1983; Ard also won three straight in 1984. Greg Biffle finished in the second position and was frustrated with all of the late-race caution flags, while Kevin Harvick in third place shared the same feelings. Clint Bowyer was the highest-finishing series regular with a fourth-place finish and Johnny Sauter rounded out the top five.

Busch on Bristol Busch Pole
Kyle Busch won the Busch Pole for tonight’s Food City 250 at the bull ring better known as Bristol Motor Speedway. Busch, driving the No. 5 Chevrolet that he drove to a runner-up finish in the Busch Series championship battle last season, turned in a qualifying lap of 15.301 seconds, at an average speed of 125.404 mph, to capture his first pole position of the season and the sixth of his career. Martin Truex Jr., defending champion and present points leader, will join Busch on the front row after he qualified on the outside pole. Ryan Newman, who will be gunning for his third consecutive Busch Series win, will be starting third, while Greg Biffle and Paul Menard finish out the top five in the starting grid.

NASCAR announced today that Brian Pattie, crew chief for the No. 41 Dodge driven by Reed Sorenson, and crew member Brandon Stafford have been ejected from Bristol Motor Speedway for violating Section 20A-10.8.4-P of the 2005 NASCAR Busch Series rule book (Tires that, in the judgment of NASCAR Officials, have been altered by unauthorized treatment will not be permitted).
