CARL EDWARDS IN THE No. 60 CHARTER COMMUNICATIONS FORD WON SATURDAY’S AARON’S 310 AT ATLANTA, SCORING HIS FIRST VICTORY IN SEVEN CAREER BUSCH SERIES STARTS. Notes: Edwards scored the first victory by a Raybestos Rookie in 14 Busch Series races at Atlanta. He is just the fourth Raybestos Rookie to score a top-five finish at Atlanta (the others were Greg Biffle (second in 2001), Kyle Busch (second), and Scott Riggs). Edwards’ previous best finish was third at Mexico City.

This is just the third time in 14 races have TWO or more Raybestos® Rookies finished in the top 10 at Atlanta. Michel Jourdain Jr. placed 10th today, his first top 10 effort in the Busch Series. In 2004, Kyle Busch finished second while J.J. Yeley grabbed a 10th-place finish. In 2002, Scott Riggs placed fourth and Johnny Sauter claimed a 10th-place finish.
A Raybestos Rookie has now led at led a lap in each of the past FIVE consecutive Busch Series races at Atlanta. The others:
2001: Greg Biffle (led once for 38 laps)
2002: Scott Riggs (led twice for 12 laps)
2002: Brian Vickers (led twice for 12 laps)
2003: David Stremme (led once for two laps)
2004: Kyle Busch (led twice for 17 laps)
At least one Raybestos® Rookie has finished in the top 10 in all five Busch Series races this season.
Two or more Raybestos® Rookies have finished inside the top 10 in four of the five Busch Series races this season. The others: Daytona (Sorenson, ninth and Edwards, 10th), California (Sorenson, fifth and Edwards, sixth); and Las Vegas (Sorenson, sixth and Edwards, seventh).
Edwards and Reed Sorenson are the only Raybestos® Rookies to score a top-five finish this season. Edwards finished third at Mexico City and Sorenson placed fifth at California Speedway.
Edwards has more top-10 finishes (five) than any other Raybestos® Rookie.
Edwards unofficially stretched his lead to 16 points over Reed Sorenson (80-64) in the Raybestos Rookie standings.
Edwards unofficially leads the Busch Series championship standings by 105 points over second place Kevin Harvick and 119 over third place Clint Bowyer.
CARL EDWARDS, No. 60 CHARTER COMMUNICATIONS FORD: HOW BIG IS THIS WIN FOR YOU? “It’s really big. This is as big as they get, to move up to a new series and to win. It’s the biggest win of my career. This is neat.” ARE YOU AWARE OF WHO IS DRIVNG THE CARS ON THE TRACK? YOU RACED TONY STEWART AND JIMMIE JOHNSON HARD FOR THE WIN. “That’s very clear to me that that’s Tony Stewart. It’s very clear. That’s really amazing. There was one point where I realized Jimmie Johnson was leading, Tony Stewart is second, Greg Biffle, Jamie McMurray, it’s like these guys are the best in the world and it’s really neat to be able to race against them. It’s neat and I learned a lot.” DOES THIS GIVE YOU CONFIDENCE GOING INTO THE CUP RACE ON SUNDAY? “A lot of confidence. You just take a deep breath and go ‘We did our job today and we can do this.’ I feel good about our Scotts car. I feel like it’s just as good or better than our Charter car was today.” HOW DO YOU TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF WHEN YOU ARE RUNNING BOTH THE CUP AND BUSCH SERIES? “The biggest thing is just getting enough sleep. I have to sleep enough and the second most important thing is to have a day off during the week. I can go ride my dirt bike or go over to the shop and read a little bit and go though my e-mail and just take some time to myself. That’s the thing that’s been helping the most. I try to have one day a week where I can just sleep and not wake up to
an alarm. Sleep to whenever I get up and then go do something fun for at least a half-day, just to get my mind off it and reset. It’s helping me a lot.”
BRAD PARROTT, CREW CHIEF, No. 60 CHARTER COMMUNICATIONS FORD: HOW DIFFICULT IS IT NOW TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A SET OF TIRES AT THE END OF THE RACE? “It’s all about the good Lord looking out for you. You play the game and it’s all about strategy and you’re going to win some and you’re going to lose some. I learned my hard lesson last year at Bristol and Jack [Roush, car owner] told me that it’s a lesson learned. You’ve got to play point racing. We’re here to win the championship, we’re not here to win races, but we’re going to win a lot of races. It’s going to be hard. You’re going to see a lot of it and you’re going to see a lot of crew chiefs on Monday morning getting chewed out by their owners and saying ‘Did you really make the right call?’ When there’s 26 cars on the lead lap and we were only three cars, it’s kind of lopsided there, you know what I mean? It’s great in one aspect and on the other aspect we’re going to get chewed out for the call that we made. It’s not a bad chewing out. It’s something like hey, next week it might not turn out our way. I’m glad I’m not an odds maker because I definitely wouldn’t have thought about that in the world. This year with the new tire, these tires are made for the Cup car. They’re made to give up, for the guys to slow down, and not have to run fast laps every time for their spoilers. So we’re taking advantage of that in the Busch Series with the spoilers we have that we can run harder on these tires. Tomorrow you’ll probably see a half-second more fall off on the Cup cars because they don’t have the downforce anymore with the rear spoilers. The tires are giving up and we’re using them to our advantage. I’m treating every track like Darlington: tire management because that’s what it is.”
MICHEL JOURDAIN JR., No. 10 ppc RACING FORD: Notes: Jourdain Jr. finished 10th, his first top-10 in five career Busch Series races. His previous best finish was 25th at California. “All day long I was running with them. Sometimes somebody would pass me but I would get them later. I felt very, very good.” WAS THIS RUN A CULMINATON OF WHAT YOU LEARNED THE PAST THREE RACES? “Of course that helps. Right away this car was so loose. I’ve never been here and in the first practice I went out and the first thing I they tell me I was at the top of the chart. The car felt good all day long. At the beginning of the race, J.J. spun the tires there and everybody on the low side just passed us. But I stayed there and I just wanted to finish the race. I got really loose a couple of times, I know that, but that’s just the way it is. I tried to be patient.” HOW MUCH OF A CONFIDENCE BOOST IS THIS RUN FOR YOU AND THE TEAM? “This is unbelievable, to run with these guys. I was like
watching everyone that was around me. I was running next to a lot of Cup guys so that was pretty cool, too.” YOU ARE IN THE TOP-30 IN OWNER POINTS SO YOU ARE GUARANTEED A SPOT IN THE RACES. “I hope we are and we should be. That’s fantastic. It’s just really, really cool. It’s been a lot of pressure coming into these races. All the tracks that are coming I’ve never been at so hopefully we can get more results to stay solid in the top 30 and then just we can get another one of these soon.”
REED SORENSON, No. 40 DISCOUNT TIRE COMPANY/JANI-KING DODGE: WHAT HAPPENED IN QUALIFYING? “We broke a transmission. I guess it got stuck between first and third and we had about 10 minutes to try to get out and it wasn’t budging. Our transmission just went down.” HOW WAS THE SETUP IN THE No. 40 CAR? “The setup was okay. There were a few little things different in the car. I wasn’t sure what the deal was and I got more comfortable with it. The seat was really off so I felt pretty uncomfortable in the seat. About halfway through the race that thing was killing me and now I feel like my body is broken in half.” WERE YOU SURPRISED HOW WELL YOU RAN IN THE RACE? “I was getting pretty excited there towards the end because we were running around 15th or so and I figured we might be able to get a few more and get close right there to the top-10 and I thought that was pretty neat. But we had a tire problem. We had a couple of loose wheels there at the end and we had to come down pit road and get those tightened up.” ARE YOU GLAD TO GET THESE FIRST FEW RACES OUT OF THE WAY? “It would have helped if this was the sixth race and not the fifth [laughs]. We’ll probably never break a transmission the rest of the year with our luck but that stuff happens and the way that I look at it, at least we got some points out of the day and we got 30 more races to come back and that’s plenty of time. Everybody just has to work a little harder now.” YOU MADE A FEW STOPS EARLY IN THE RACE. WAS THAT A PIT STRATEGY MOVE? “We were just getting gas because when you’re that far back it doesn’t really matter. There’s only two cars behind you so we were getting gas. That way we could go a little longer.”
DENNY HAMLIN, No. 20 ROCKWELL AUTOMATION CHEVROLET: “It wasn’t bad. The car was good at times and it was bad at times. We were really good on long runs. I wish the race would have just went green. We were sitting in really good shape and our laps times actually got better the longer we went. It’s just one of those deals where Cup drivers come in and take the top nine spots again. It’s hard on us but we’ve just got to get better. We’re definitely better than what we were at Vegas, that’s for sure, but still not where we need to be. We’ll take it and learn and have a better week next week.”
BLAKE FEESE, No. 5 LOWE’S/HITACHI POWER TOOLS CHEVROLET: “The guys had to work all morning to put a whole new setup under it. For some reason or another we just couldn’t get any front grip in the car. We’d be good for a few laps and we’d start pushing. I’ve got to thank all the Lowe’s employees for giving me this opportunity. It wouldn’t turn so I banged it off the wall to see if I could make it turn [smiles].
KERTUS DAVIS, No. 0 RACEGIRL CHEVROLET: “It was decent day for the RACEGIRL Chevrolet. We couldn’t quite get the car right and once we did, the tires went away pretty quick on us. I guess I should have been running up at the top saving my tires a little more than what I was. I was really driving the wheels off of it because I hadn’t got to run a whole race since Daytona and I was pretty excited about it. We finished 28th and that’s not too bad of a day for the Davis Motorsports Chevrolet.”
