Alan Kulwicki 250 - Ford Post-Race Quotes
GREG BIFFLE-60-Charter Communications Ford Taurus (Finished 7th) - THE TURNING POINT FOR YOU TONIGHT SEEMED TO BE THE LAP 78 CAUTION FLAG THAT ALLOWED YOU TO STAY ON THE LEAD LAP. "It was, but I would rather been battling for the lead. The lapped cars were tough, but I wasn't good enough to race with anybody. I didn't race with anybody all night and basically spent 250 laps trying to hold my position." WAS THIS WORTH THE TRAVEL FROM CALIFORNIA? "Not for a seventh-place finish. We're here to win races from here on out and when we don't do that we're disappointed. We're not points racing anymore; we want to win."
MIKE WALLACE-4-Biagi Bros. Ford Taurus (Finished 11th) - "We finished 11th, so it was worthwhile for us to put up our own money to come out here. I'm very happy with the run compared to what we had. We're still not good enough to run up front, but we got those "Lucky Dog" passes a couple of times, but we'll take it any way we can get it and go to Daytona. I'm very happy for our team and Fred Biagi for committing to come to the race without a sponsor. That's a big commitment right in itself." YOU GOT THE FREE PASS TWICE TONIGHT. AS A DRIVER ARE YOU AWARE OF YOUR POSITION TO BE ABLE TO CAPITALIZE ON THAT RULE? "You know where you're at. The 21 beat us out of the pits once, we got blocked behind a car and he got the free pass. Then we were the first one in line. We weren't fast enough to race the leaders tonight. The leaders got away on the restart, so you hope for the caution and get back around. We were very fortunate to get a second, and how we did that, I don't. But, you do know where you're at, and you're racing two races within a race."
JASON KELLER-22-Miller High Life Ford Taurus (Finished 3rd) - "The Miller High Life car was really good all night, but it was a little bit too free on entry and it hurt us a little bit battling for the win. We're in Miller High Life country, so I sure would have liked to have won." WHAT HAPPENED ON THE LAST LAP BETWEEN YOU AND THE NO. 38? "I got into the back of the 38 and I really didn't mean to. I know that me and Shane have had our problems, but he was really protecting the bottom and checked way up and I wasn't expecting it. I'm sure he's upset about it, but in all honesty, I really didn't mean to, that's just the way it goes. That was my fault. He checked up a lot more than I expected and I got into the back of the 38. Just battling for the win and I got myself loose getting in when I was up under the 38. Shucks, I think I let that one get away." DID THE CAR'S HANDLING CHANGE DRASTICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF THE NIGHT? "It was a little free on entry and we made it really good in the middle part of the race and checked out on them. It was a little bit back and forth, tight then loose, tight then loose, but shucks, we just didn't do it." WHEN YOU WERE IN THIRD PLACE BEHIND THE NOS. 38 AND 32, DID YOU EVER THINK THERE WAS A CHANCE THAT THEIR INEXPERIENCE WOULD TAKE THEM OUT OF THE RACE? "It was really slick out there, so we were all kind of sliding around. It was a hard night. I had a good position and a good run to take the lead, but I got myself loose on entry. I'm a little bit bummed at myself right now. I got really, really loose when I got underneath the 38 and really almost took us both out racing for the lead, but fortunately I checked up and got us both saved because I didn't want to take anybody out like that. It was a hard-fought night. We knew we could come in here and run up front, and we did, but we just didn't put it in victory lane."
JASON KELLER PRESS CONFERENCE
"I got in the back of the 38 car. Unfortunately, he checked way up and I wasn't expecting it. It's kind of one of those deals, I didn't mean to, if you hit somebody in the back on the freeway it's your fault. I'm sure he's upset, but he checked up a whole lot more than I anticipated and unfortunately I got in the back of him."
"He was maintaining racing speed, but his last corner and his car had gone away a little bit, he checked way up and I was, in my mind, I was thinking all I needed to do was get off the corner good and beat him back to the line. When he got out of the gas and I got in the gas, we met in the middle."
"The car wasn't quite as good in the beginning as we had hoped. We made some changes on that first pit stop and the guys flew up from third to first coming out of the pits. The car was a lot better at that point, so I felt like we made our car better in the middle part of the race and not quite so good the second set. And the third set, I felt like we were back as good as we were when we led. Just a little free on entry was one of my biggest problems all night, and that showed when I was battling the 38 car for the lead. I really couldn't drive in the corner like I needed to to really accelerate off. I knew the car was good today, I just hoped it wouldn't change because of the practice in the daylight and race in the night. Fortunately for us, we're in Miller High Life country and we put on a good show for the Miller fans."
"It being at night and being about 30 degrees cooler if I remember. This tire is not allowing us to run last year's setups. Although we won last year, we have nowhere close to the same setup. We brought the same race car back, so you'd think bringing the same race car back to the same race track that we won that we would run close to the same setup, but we were way different. We tried that setup today, but it really didn't work for us. We adapted our own setup, and at times, I felt like we had as good a race car as any. Our car wasn't quite as good on long runs and it seemed like a couple of them were better on long runs."
"I've been here since Wednesday. You're not racing two races. Usually we race to qualify and then we race to race. I like them. It's better on the crew guys. It usually allows us more time at home, but because I had a lot of sponsor obligations with Miller High Life, I didn't get to do that. Especially at the short tracks, like here and we did it at St. Louis and IRP, I'm all for it."
