RAYBESTOS® ROOKIE CONTENDER QUOTES FOR THE SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS MOVIE 300 NASCAR BUSCH SERIES RACE AT LOWE'S MOTOR SPEEDWAY, OCTOBER 15, 2004.
KYLE BUSCH in the No. 5 SpongeBob SquarePants The Movie Chevrolet was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race at Charlotte. He finished fifth, his 13th top-five finish this season. Busch led the race once for 22 laps. Unofficially, Busch is second in the series point chase, 144 behind leader Martin Truex Jr. "The night was good. It certainly could have been a lot better. We struggled a little bit there. We got the right front fender knocked in so we had to come back down pit road and fix it. But we charged back so hard. I was driving the wheels off that thing. I don't know if I was out to lunch or how bad I was driving it but we were able to come back to fifth. What else can you ask for?" YOU MADE UP 21 POSITIONS IN THE FINAL 62 LAPS. "That just shows you the 5 car was an awesome car tonight and probably should have won the race. We just didn't have track position. We kind of fought that. We started back like 18th and we fought up to the front. We led for a while and my teammate Jimmie Johnson was strong, too. The Hendrick cars probably could have had a 1-2 but we just weren't up there at the end to fight with it." WHAT HAPPENED ON ROAD WHEN YOU KNOCKED THE FENDER IN? "I guess I ran into the back of the 20 car. It's just a shame deal for us." WHAT HAPPENED AT THE END OF THE RACE BETWEEN YOU AND TRUEX? "I got underneath him and was trying to pass him and I guess I got him loose with air and I don't know if he hit the fence or not. But I had a good run on him coming off two." DID YOU MAKE CONTACT WITH DAVE BLANEY? "Yeah I did. I'm terribly sorry to Dave Blaney. In fact, I've got to go find him. We hit him and spun him out. It was a dang shame because he had a pretty good car and probably should have finished in the top-five too. I got into the back of him. I must have got him loose too because he stopped in the center of the corner just to catch his car and I hit 'em." IT SEEMED LIKE THERE WAS A LOT OF INTENSE RACING TONIGHT. "It was a crazy night. There was a lot of cautions. I don't know what it was all about. I wish that I didn't make one of them. All in all, the Patrick car could have won the race but we'll go on to next week and see what we can do at Memphis."
CLINT BOWYER in the No. 33 TBA Chevrolet scored his sixth top-10 finish in 13-career Busch Series starts at Charlotte, all of them coming in 2004. Bowyer's most recent top-10 was a 4th place effort at Pikes Peak in July. "It wasn't a bad run. The
goal was to learn at this track. This is one of the toughest tracks on the circuit and that's why Kevin [Harvick, car owner] put me in this car. I want to thank Kevin and DeLana for giving me the opportunity. It was a good run for the guys and a good effort." IT LOOKED LIKE A PHYSICAL RACE. "It really was. That's something that I'm not used to. I mean they were beating and banging on each other the whole race. Your eyes would get pretty big. I just had trouble on restarts and let those guys get around me quite a bit. I just need to work on some restarts it looks like." YOU IMPROVED GREATLY FROM PRACTICE TO THE RACE. "Absolutely. I had a good time and I just hope I get to run this car again at Darlington. It would be fun." HOW MUCH DID YOU LEARN TONIGHT? "A bunch. This track is hard. This is one of those tracks where you can run hard and get by with it. You learn to be aggressive and you need to be aggressive at this place." DID YOU KEEP UP WITH THE CHANGING TRACK CONDITIONS TONIGHT? "Absolutely. We had a pretty good car. I was a little tight starting off and we kept inching back on it and kept getting better and better."
BUSCH PRESS CONFERENCE
"Like Jimmie [Johnson] said, we started 18th and he started 20th and we were just driving our way to the front, picking our way through traffic. The Patrick car was really, really good. In the beginning we were a little bit tight and we kind of worked on it and made a few adjustments during the pit stops and then we really had it rolling. It was really digging through the corners and being able to pass cars. At points we were half-a-second faster than the field so it was definitely a pretty good racecar. There late in the race we came down to get the gas there to make sure we were good for the end because we were waiting for that long run in order to happen so we wanted to make sure that we were going to be safe. I ran into the back of the 20 car and messed up the right front fender and we had to come back down pit road and pull it back out so then we got mired back in traffic. It's really hard to pass and come back through there. Everybody here is so fast. When we do have a faster car you can't really show it until you get out to the
front so it's a little bit difficult. All in all, we probably could have won the race and if not finished second to Mike Bliss. It was an awesome run for him and congratulations to him. I've also got to apologize to Dave Blaney. He had an awesome car tonight and probably could have finished in the top-five and I kind of screwed up his day as well too by getting into the back of him there." ON THE PIT ROAD INCIDENT. "I forgot all about the paddle man because usually we're taking tires and stuff and it's green by the time we get down there anyway. The 20 car checked-up and I saw that and then I saw the 8 car checking up and I couldn't get slowed down quite quick enough so that was probably a mistake on my part getting into the back of him."
