Nemechek Goes from Green, White, to Checkered at Kansas
Just when it appeared that Tony Stewart would earn his first career Busch series victory, he was knocked from the lead with just over a lap remaining. Stewart had dominated the event and was on his way to victory until a late caution flag for debris on the backstretch bunched up the field. After the ensuing restart with four laps remaining, Joe Nemechek was able to reach Stewart’s bumper with two laps to go. The two cars made contact, sending Stewart into the outside wall and the race into extra innings. The Mr. Goodcents 300 would end with a green-white-checkered finish, the first at Kansas Speedway. Nemechek held off Greg Biffle by .041 seconds to score his first Busch series victory of the season in the closest finish of the year. Stewart led the most laps in the event, leading three times for a total of 115 laps, while Nemechek led only the final six, including the caution-flag laps. Biffle grabbed the second finishing position, while David Stremme came home in third. Ashton Lewis Jr. and Ron Hornaday finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Menard Nabs First Busch Pole
Paul Menard won his first Busch series pole position in 28 career starts today at Kansas Speedway, grabbing the top starting spot for the Mr. Goodcents 300. Menard’s best previous start was an eighth-place effort in April at Talladega. Menard won the pole after turning a qualifying lap in 30.671 seconds, at an average speed of 176.062 mph. The next three starting positions will go to drivers competing in Sunday’s Nextel Cup event. Kasey Kahne will start from the outside pole, followed by Robby Gordon and Kyle Busch in the second row. Points leader Martin Truex Jr. will start from the fifth position.
