Stacker 200 presented by YJ Stinger - Rookie Qualifying Quotes
Where the Raybestos Rookies will start at Dover:
RAYBESTOS® ROOKIE CONTENDER QUALIFYING QUOTES FOR THE STACKER 200 NASCAR BUSCH SERIES RACE AT DOVER INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2004.
KYLE BUSCH, #5 LOWE'S/SHOP VAC CHEVROLET: "We're happy with that. That was all she wrote, that was pretty much it. It was a good safe lap and it was comfortable. If it's second quick, it's second quick. It it's within the top-five, then we'll that that too. It's good to start up front here, missing some of the wrecks that can happen here at the Monster. We're going to get a good pit stall selection out here too." WHAT DID YOU LEARN HERE IN JUNE THAT CAN HELP YOU IN SATURDAY'S RACE? "You try it every week, but we tried to keep our nose clean and we got caught up in a mix-up on pit road and then we got caught up in a wreck. Once we got in the mishap on pit road we had to start in the back because we came in to pull our fender back out. Then we got in the back and we knocked the nose of the car but we were able to dig our way all the way back up to fifth. It's just a matter of keeping your car and your nose clean here. If you can have a good turning car that rotates all the way around the corner, that's what you need here but it just can't build up too tight the longer you get in a run. It is hard to pass here because when you get up behind somebody you get a little bit tight and usually if they're not right at the bottom which is the fast way around here, they are hauling the mail up in the middle or even at the top. Everybody always files down into one groove down at the bottom coming up off the corner. They might be up a little bit in the center but they come down and they go back up to the wall again. It's definitely difficult here but we'll see what we can do." YOU AND TRUEX JR. RUN SO WELL EACH WEEK. DOES THAT TAKE SOME OF THE PRESSURE OFF RACING FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP? "The only thing we can do when we come to the racetrack is concentrate on our own car and make it the best that we possibly can. Every week we keep doing that and we keep trying harder, and we keep coming up with second and fifth place finishes. If we could have had the bad string of luck in June and July out of the way we could be the points leader. We've just got to work on it more and more and keep after those guys." DID YOU TRY TO SAVE SOME TESTS FOR LATE IN THE YEAR? "Not really. Since I was a Raybestos Rookie, I had to go test in the beginning part of the year and sometimes you've got to be able to do that kind of thing. Here at the end of the year, we're going to save our tests for places that I haven't been, like Kansas. The only other place that I have some experience is Homestead but we're going to go there and test and see what we can do there."
J.J. YELEY, #18 MBNA CHEVROLET: "The lap that should have counted, unfortunately, we were pretty loose. I didn't push the car near hard enough for fear of getting in an accident. We compensated for the racetrack a little bit by freeing it up a little bit. We made a couple of mock runs and they were pretty loose too. We thought that we had gone far enough but just not quite far enough, unfortunately. The second lap a lot of guys got tight and my car got better. If we had a third lap we might have gotten a couple more tenths out of it. We backed up what we ran in practice but we had really good race runs. We're going to fine tune it a little bit in happy hour and get ready for the race." HOW BIG OF A FACTOR IS PATIENCE HERE? "That's the one thing I learned here in the spring race is that a lot of patience is necessary here. It's pretty hard to dodge accidents at this place. Unfortunately, starting in the middle of the pack, things normally happen right around you. We'll keep our eyes open and definitely try to keep the thing out of trouble."
PAUL MENARD, #11 MENARDS/PITTSBURGH PAINTS CHEVROLET: "That's all we had. It was a little bit hotter in qualifying and I was hoping to pick up a little bit but I guess we ran about the same. We made a little adjustment on pit road. We went down a pound in the right rear because everybody was complaining about loose and we were just too tight. We probably shouldn't have done that. We'll see what happens tomorrow."
BUSCH PRESS CONFERENCE
"Basically, it started out a little rough. We were trying to work on our car to make it a little better. It was ill handling a little bit this morning in practice but we were able to capitalize on it and make it better and make some good changes. Lance [McGrew, crew chief] and the guys did an awesome job working on it. We'll go on and work on it some more in happy hour later tonight but qualifying overall was good for us. I thought that it was a pretty strong lap. We ended up second and that was about all we had and we fell a little bit to fourth. It will still get us a good pit stall and hopefully it will start us up front where we're hopefully going to be able to hang with these guys. It's definitely good to qualify up front here. Obviously last year in this race a couple of guys up front got into a mishap and caused a wreck and us guys further back in the pack just really had nowhere to go and I plowed into a guy and a bunch of other guys wrecked. Sometimes it's tough when you get mired back in traffic but you always try to work your way up there. It's tough to pass sometimes too when you get behind somebody. The track is so fast and everybody usually runs one line, right on the bottom or you kind of diamond it a little bit.
There's only a few chances that you have to pass and make some good moves. It's easier when you start up front on your equipment."
