MBNA America 200 - Rookie Qualifying Quotes
KYLE BUSCH, #5 LOWE'S/SHOP VAC CHEVROLET: Note: Prior to qualifying at Dover, Busch visited with members of the media. YOU HAVE HAD A TERRIFIC SEASON WITH WINS AT RICHMOND AND CHARLOTTE AND LEAD THE BUSCH SERIES STANDINGS BY 38 POINTS OVER MARTIN TRUEX. "It's a great way to go about the season and there's plenty more to come out of it. Everything that Team Lowe's Racing has been doing for us and the whole team for a Raybestos Rookie. We're just trying to do what we need to do week in and week out and try to get those top-fives and if you can't do that get the top-10s, which lead into the points for the championship. We just keep going about it week in and week out, just doing what we need." THE POINTS LEAD HAS CHANGED HANDS AFTER EACH OF THE LAST FOUR OR FIVE RACES. DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT AT ALL? "Not really. Lance [McGrew, crew chief] was joking around about it, how it was kind of how it was toward the end of the year last year. Brian [Vickers] would have the lead and he would have a bad week. Somebody else would have it and they would have a bad week. I guess it's just all about how you can attack the weekend by how the point situation is but nonetheless we just try to go out there and do the best job that we can. Today we kind of struggled in the first practice in race trim but we were able to get back up there at the top with the qualifying so hopefully we can Lowe's/Shop Vac Chevy somewhere on the front row maybe this week and go after 'em in the race." THIS TEAM WON AT DOVER LAST FALL. ARE YOU USING THEIR NOTES THIS WEEKEND? "We started out with what Brian ran here last year and it was pretty decent, a really good car. It was just that the speed wasn't quite there. We made some changes to it in order to make it a little more comfortable and get it a little more used to what I need in order to get into the corner and to get off the corner. Hopefully those changes that we made aren't going to hurt us too much and we're going to make some more come happy hour and try to get a little bit better racecar even yet so we can keep ourselves up front."
"The Cup races so far have really not been anything that we've expected or wanted, obviously. We keep going at it and plugging away at what we need to do and we're trying to get that #84 Carquest Chevy up front. It's going to take a little bit of time in
order to get used to the Cup car. I think the horsepower versus aerodynamics of a Cup car is a little bit different obviously from the Busch car. It will just take a little bit of time to get used to it. Hopefully after we do finally get used to it we'll be able to run up front consistently and hopefully do what Kasey Kahne has been doing. He's been doing really well. Hopefully we can try to get somewhere near him."
"I did get a chance to see it. I heard that a lot of people thought it was pretty cool. It was just something that I thought of doing real quick. I saw a burnout in ASA and there was so much smoke that you couldn't see 'em and then finally the guy was just standing there and he wasn't on top of the car or nothing. I've got a couple different ideas but nothing special. Hopefully we can keep winning these races in order to keep doing burnouts and stuff like that. That's the most important thing." HOW WAS THE LAP? "I guess we didn't compensate enough for the rubber laid down by the Cup cars but overall it was a good run for us. It will put us somewhere up front where we will hopefully stay out of trouble. We weren't able to do that last year because qualifying was 'hurricaned' out so maybe we'll have a better start this year." DID THE TRACK CHANGE FROM PRACTICE TO QUALIFYING? "It was. There was some more rubber down and it really made the car tight. This place, the more rubber you get down the tighter you get. That's why you see guys move up in the race in order to get clean concrete again but still you have to make your car work through it." THE TEMPERATURE SEEMS TO HAVE COOLED THIS AFTERNOON. DID THAT TIGHTEN THE TRACK UP? "I don't think concrete makes that much of a difference as much as asphalt does because there's not as much oil in the materials and stuff like that. I don't know, maybe that didn't help us either. We'll have to see what we can get through happy hour and hopefully the weather will stay away from us."
PAUL MENARD, #33 MENARDS/PEAK CHEVROLET: "We kind of got held up by a car that jumped out in front of us in practice when we were making our qualifying run. I was hoping to go faster than that. We just got really loose. We put more tape on the nose and took some wedge out and it was too far, I guess." WAS THE TRACK DIFFERENT FROM PRACTICE TO QUALIFYING? "For us it just felt about the same. Mechanically the car was looser. We hoped that the track was going to tighten up a little bit with the Cup guys running, putting more rubber down, but I guess that wasn't the case." THIS IS YOUR FIRST RACE AT DOVER. "It's a cool track, a lot of fun. It took a while to figure out the limits of the place and I've still got a ways to go. We've picked up time every time we've gone out for the most part. I'm looking forward to happy hour to pick up more time."
BILLY PARKER, #66 DURAFLAME DODGE: "We wanted to pick up but we didn't so we'll just keep digging, get her ready for race trim now." HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO COME HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME? "It's pretty difficult. These cars are a little different. The track is probably different from any other track. The biggest thing is not racing week in and week out and you kind of get out of your groove, especially when you are a Raybestos Rookie and new at this. These cars are new, these tracks are new and you need to be out there as much as you can. The Duraflame Dodge isn't bad. The boys are working hard and we'll just keep on digging and get it ready for the race. They don't pay anything for qualifying. We're in the race and now we can work on putting the Duraflame Dodge in victory lane, hopefully." WAS THE TRACK DIFFERENT FROM PRACTICE TO QUALIFYING? "It was fairly consistent. There was more rubber on the racetrack and I felt like it was a tick tighter up off but it was fairly consistent."
J.J. YELEY, #18 MBNA CHEVROLET: "We're fine with that lap. We fought being tight in practice and made some changes to help that. I guess the characteristic of the place is that it normally gets slicker during qualifying. We watched a couple of guys out there and they were sliding around. We made a couple of adjustments to tighten the car back up and probably should have left it alone. We were a little gun shy after last week at Charlotte. We had a really great car in qualifying trim so hopefully we can put the MBNA car up front. I think we were seventh quickest in what was race trim. Hopefully it doesn't rain and we can get out there and try a couple more things for happy hour. Because this place is concrete I don't think it's temperamental to temperature as a lot of the other racetracks, especially Charlotte. Normally this time of year it's pretty hot here so maybe the racetrack didn't loosen up quite a much as it normally does so it kind of threw us for a little bit of a loop."
