McMurray Wins the Race, Truex Clinches Series Title
Jamie McMurray won the battle but Martin Truex Jr. won the war. On a day that McMurray won his second consecutive Busch series race, Truex earned the season’s championship trophy. In his first full season in the Busch series, Truex captured the 2004 title, thanks to a fourth-place finish and a string of trouble for Kyle Busch. Truex now has a 257-point lead in the standings to put himself out of reach of all challengers as the series heads to Homestead next week. The title is the first for Truex and Chance 2 Motorsports and gives Dale Earnhardt Jr. his third Busch series championship, two as a driver and one as an owner. On the race front, McMurray, a Nextel Cup regular, captured his second straight NBS victory, each a first for a different car owner. Last week’s win at Phoenix was the first Busch win for Chip Ganassi and today’s win was the first series win for Rusty Wallace. The win is the third of the season for McMurray, ironically, whose other win at Rockingham came for Braun Racing, giving him three wins for three different car owners. Ashton Lewis Jr. equaled his career-best effort today, coming home in the second position. Mike Bliss captured the third spot, while Truex and Matt Kenseth rounded out the top five.
Busch Qualifying Halted, Truex Starts from Top Spot
Qualifying for the Bi-Lo 200 at Darlington Raceway was canceled due to rain. The qualifying session was first delayed by rain, then halted once again when the rain arrived after 27 of 51 cars made a run. The starting lineup was set according the NASCAR Busch Series rulebook, giving Martin Truex Jr. the top starting spot. Truex, leading Kyle Busch by 161 points, is looking to clinch the 2004 series championship on Saturday. Busch will join Truex on the front row, while Greg Biffle and Kevin Harvick start from the second row.
