Labonte Captures First Busch Series Win
Like father, like son. Justin Labonte claimed his first Busch series win on Saturday afternoon and brought back memories of his father Terry Labonte’s last win when he took the checkered flag for a victory lap around Chicagoland Speedway. Labonte was running second at the white flag, when leader Mike Wallace ran out of fuel, handing the lead and the win over to the young Labonte. Wallace’s luck was typical of the leaders on this day in Chicago, as it seemed that most everyone who led a lap had some type of problems, starting with pole sitter Bobby Hamilton Jr. blowing an engine eight laps into the event. Rookie Kyle Busch led the most laps on the day, pacing the field for 49 of the race’s 200 laps, but had engine troubles late in the race. Labonte led twice for 12 laps, leading a race for the first time in his career. Jason Keller finished second, .419 seconds behind Labonte, and moved to third in the series points chase. Jeff Burton came home in third, followed by Kasey Kahne and Ashton Lewis Jr. in the top five.
Hamilton Jr. Wins Busch Pole at Chicagoland Speedway
Bobby Hamilton Jr. picked up where he left off last season, at the front of the field at Chicago. And much like the race last year, it wasn’t even close. Hamilton, the defending winner at Chicago, won the pole position for the Tropicana Twisters 300 at Chicagoland Speedway with an ultra-fast lap of 29.410 seconds, at an average speed of 183.611 mph. Hamilton’s qualifying lap was better than a mile per hour faster than the second-place starter, setting a new track record in the process. Rookie Kyle Busch will start from the outside pole, while a couple of Nextel Cup regulars, Joe Nemechek and Matt Kenseth, start from row two.
