TrimSpa Dream Body 250 - Scott Wimmer Notes

Scott Wimmer Event Preview
No. 23 Stacker 2/YJ Stinger Chevrolet Monte Carlo
Pikes Peak International Raceway - July 26, 2003

Wimmer on Pikes Peak: Scott Wimmer, driver of the No. 23 Stacker 2/YJ Stinger Chevrolet, finished sixth in last year's race at Pikes Peak International Raceway.

"Pikes Peak is a unique track, kind of like a big circle and it is really tricky to get around," said Wimmer. "The great thing about Pikes Peak is there are a lot of different lines you can run there. You can run low, middle or high and I have seen four-wide racing at times. Because there are so many grooves and the track is so forgiving, you tend to see long green flag runs and very few cautions there, so it can come down to a fuel mileage deal. The key will be setting up your car for long runs. Also, altitude comes into play because the motors run differently at a higher altitude, so they have to be tuned to make that adjustment. If they are tuned wrong, you'll see people blowing motors. "

"Last year we had a really good run at Pikes Peak," said Wimmer. "We ran up front most of the day, but the race came down to a fuel mileage deal and we weren't getting as good gas mileage as everyone else. We ended up having to pit and didn't have enough time to get back to the front. We finished sixth, which was good, but this year our Stacker 2/YJ Stinger team looks to improve on that finish."

"Another reason Pikes Peak is so enjoyable is it is a stand-alone Busch Series event and you always look forward to racing there because we only see the track once a year," said Wimmer. "It also helps that the scenery in Colorado is absolutely breathtaking."

Downhill Racing: Although Wimmer has only raced twice at Pikes Peak International Raceway previously, he has traveled to Colorado many times before to compete in another form of racing, downhill skiing.

"I used to travel to Colorado when I was younger to ski, as many as five or six times," said Wimmer. "I started skiing at the age of four and then at age five, I started competitive downhill skiing. I competed in the Junior Olympics in Winter Park, Colorado when I was 14 years old and I placed 13th among the top 150 skiers in the nation. It was a pretty amazing accomplishment, one that I am still very proud of. I started racing cars one year later, so I ended up giving up my skiing career."

Equipment: The Stacker 2/YJ Stinger Racing team is taking the same car to Pikes Peak that competed earlier this year at Kentucky where it qualified 10th and finished fifth.
