Civil Air Patrol Racing
Ashton Lewis, Jr. Race Preview
Pikes Peak International Raceway
Trim Spa Dream Body 250
July 26, 2003
CAP Racing Notes & Quotes:
Driver, Ashton Lewis, Jr. on Pikes Peak:
"The last two years we have been really strong at Pikes Peak, in both
qualifying runs and finishes. Last year we had our best qualifying effort
of the year there, starting third. We went on to finish ninth, which was
disappointing to us because we felt we had a car capable of more than just a
top-10 finish. We felt like we had a car capable of winning the race. The
Pikes Peak tracks really suits my driving style and I feel like we know how
to get around it pretty well. Going into this year's event, we feel like we
are better prepared than we have been all season. We learned a lot about
our cars and bodies from our trip to the wind tunnel last week and we have
made changes to the car based on those findings. In all, we feel great
about our chances there this weekend and we look forward to seeing our hard
work rewarded."
Equipment:
Lewis, Jr. will drive chassis No. 5 this weekend at Pikes Peak International
Raceway. Two of Lewis, Jr.'s four top-10 finishes of the season have come
while competing with this chassis - Charlotte (8th ) and Kentucky (7th).
Pit Notes:
In memory. Lt. Peter Ober (US NAVY)
Last week, Lewis's cousin, Lt. Peter Ober was sadly killed in a helicopter
accident while serving his country in Sicily with the United States Navy. A
decal in honor of Peter will be on the No. 46 CAP Chevrolet this weekend
through the end of the 2003 season.
Civil Air Patrol Cadet Appreciation BBQ
Award-winning cadets from Civil Air Patrol's Rocky Mountain Region will
enjoy a unique opportunity to hobnob with Air Force brass, aviation writers,
former Air Force Thunderbird pilots, city officials and leaders from
industry during a backyard barbeque on Friday, July 25, 2003 in Colorado
Springs. The informal barbeque celebrates the cadets' completion of a
rigorous CAP leadership training course. Hosting the barbeque at his home
will be Rick Broome, a longtime CAP member and well-known aviation artist.
