Hamilton Jr. Wins Rain-Delayed, Rain-Shortened Event at Phoenix
Who said that it never rains in the desert? Bobby Hamilton Jr. took the checkered flag in the rain-delayed and rain-shortened Bashas' Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. After being delayed some 2 hours and 24 minutes by rain, the event was cut short by 19 laps once the rain returned. Hamilton was out in front of Kevin Harvick in the closing laps before the caution flag came out at lap 175 due to the rain. It was Hamilton’s series-leading fourth trip to victory lane in 2003 and the fifth win of his career. Harvick crossed the finish line in second, followed by Brian Vickers in third. Joe Nemechek and Ron Hornaday rounded out the top five, while Scott Riggs finished sixth. Riggs moved atop the Busch series point standings, leading Hornaday by 17 points with two races remaining.
Harvick on Phoenix Pole Position
Kevin Harvick will start from the pole position for the Busch series race at Phoenix International Raceway. Harvick set a new track record with a qualifying lap of 27.082 seconds, at an average speed of 132.930 mph, to grab the pole for the Bashas' Supermarkets 200, the eighth time that he has started from the top spot this season. Greg Biffle will start from the outside pole, giving Winston Cup regulars a sweep of the front row. David Stremme qualified in the third spot while Bobby Hamilton Jr. starts fourth.
