Winn-Dixe 200 - Rookie Qualifying Quotes
JOEY CLANTON IN THE NO. 27 TRIMSPA PONTIAC WAS THE TOP RAYBESTOS® ROOKIE
QUALIFIER AT DARLINGTON. THIS IS THE FIFTH TIME IN 2003 HE HAS TAKEN TOP ROOKIE
HONORS IN TIME TRIALS.
ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THAT LAP? "No, because I got in too deep and let it push
up and got my Darlington stripe for the first time. The guys worked real hard
all day and they brought us a good car here. I was trying to get all I could
for them. Everybody with the TrimSpa Pontiac and Brewco Motorsports team did
their job. I knew we were going out early and just wanted to make sure we
put a good lap down. I tried a little hard, got into three and that was our
quickest lap. I think if we hadn't got in there and got the wall we'd have been
a little faster." WAS IT A DISADVANTAGE GOING OUT EARLY? "I don't know if
was a disadvantage. We've been in that situation where we had a good car and
then just saved a little too much out there on the racetrack and it hurt us on
our qualifying run. I tried not to leave anything out there and went a little
too hard." IS THE TRACK VERY SLICK TODAY? "No, it's got a lot of grip in it.
It's hot our here but our car seems to be working real good. Hopefully
we'll have a good car for tomorrow."
JASON WHITE, NO. 0 EAGLE JET INTERNATIONAL CHEVROLET:
"We were actually a little loose. We should have probably tightened it up a
little bit but that wasn't too bad. I think it was better than last week.
We'll live with it and go on from there." HOW ABOUT THE TRACK? "It's
Darlington and with the heat out here like it is it's hot and slick but it's a lot of
fun out there to drive." DO YOU LIKE RACING AT DARLINGTON? "I like it, man.
It's challenging and every lap is a different lap. You don't know what to
expect in each corner so it's a lot of fun to drive. I ran the trucks a couple
of years ago and it's just wild. You have people with new tires and old tires
and you put them all out there with a couple of seconds' difference between
all of them. You really have to be on your toes. It will be interesting."
SANDY JONES, CREW CHIEF, NO. 27 TRIMSPA PONTIAC:
ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THAT LAP? "Oh, gosh yeah. The track temperature has gone
up like 20 degrees since last practice. We're real happy with that. With
Joey's experience and what we're going through here we're tickled to death with
that lap right there, especially as hot as it is. I hope it gets hotter. It's
a spring and shock combination as everyone knows to keep the tires on the car
here. You're going to run 50 laps, put on tires and go 50 more and then put
on another set for the last 47. It's our job to get the springs and shocks
and Joey has to make sure that he drinks plenty of fluids tonight. He has some
air conditioning stuff that he puts in there so he'll be all right. Hell,
he's young guy. On this particular car we don't really have brake ducts but we
have blowers going that get air to those things. If your car is doing right
you don't really need to use that much brake anyway so that's what we're
striving for is to try to get the car right so he doesn't have to use the brakes that
much."
