Winn-Dixe 200 - Rookie Post-Race Quotes
JASON WHITE, NO. 0 EAGLE JET INTERNATIONAL CHEVROLET:
WHAT HAPPENED? "The car in front of me hit the wall. I tried to get out of
it but it happened so quick there was just nowhere to go, really. We just
wanted to finish and we were just saving our tires in the beginning, just waiting
and waiting. Right there I was just waiting because I knew that I didn't
want to run behind some of those guys. I was biding my time. I went to pass him
and he hit the wall and there was just nowhere I could go. It's just
Darlington. I guess he got in too deep and scraped the wall. It's just Darlington.
You get into the wall pretty easy here." HOW HARD DID YOU HIT? "It was
pretty decent. It wasn't the worst thing, I guess, but it was pretty hard."
JOEY CLANTON IN THE NO. 27 TRIMSPA PONTIAC WAS THE RAYBESTOS® ROOKIE OF THE
RACE AT DARLINGTON. HE TOOK THE HONOR FOR THE FOURTH TIME THIS SEASON.
"We had a real good race car. The TrimSpa Pontiac was good. We had to make
it through the first stop, get it adjusted from the damage from yesterday.
The guys worked hard. They got here early this morning and repaired what we
tore up yesterday and we put together a good racecar. We showed it there when
we actually got up front. We could run up front with them. We cut a tire down
on that next to last run and we were just trying to hold on then. But we
lost a lap again and that really hurt us for our day. The big picture for us is
Raybestos® Rookie of the Year. We got another stripe on the car but we tried
to make sure she (the track) didn't bite us hard." YOU PHYSICALLY HELPED YOUR
TEAM MAKE REPAIRS TO THE CAR THIS MORNING. "It was a good start for the
weekend. We got a good qualifying spot: touched the wall there but that's trying
hard. Last night in happy hour I got free, got in the wall, and it just came
around on me. You tear 'em up you fix 'em. If you are at the racetrack and
the guys are going to work hard you've got to get right in there with them, I
think. We worked hard as a group, as a team, got the car together and came out
of here with a good finish." ON RACING AT RICHMOND NEXT WEEK. "I'm looking
forward to it. I'm looking forward to being able to go to a racetrack for the
second time. We're going to take the racecar that we ran there in the spring.
We had a good car there and hopefully we'll be able to get a better finish
than today. It's all about David (Green, his teammate) trying to win the
points championship and us trying to win the Raybestos® Rookie of the Year. That's
what we are focusing on." ARE YOU LEARNING MORE HOW TO RACE AT THIS LEVEL?
"I think I'm getting more respect from them but it's tough coming in Bristol
one week and Darlington the other week and try and get respect. I tried to get
out of the way with the guys today and let them go there at the end. We had
a faster racecar, I think, than the fifth place car and circumstances lost
that lap. It's kind of tough here to have to back down and roll out of the gas
at the right spot because if you let guys go by that can kind of get you in
situations if you are not careful. If you let out of the gas at the wrong place
some of the guys might have got mad. We were just trying to get out of the
way. When nobody is racing with you but one car and he's way back there you are
just trying to get out of the way for them. I think it's better if you're
actually racing out there and they run up behind you and they are faster than
you, it's easier that way. But when you are trying to get out of the way and
you have been in a rhythm all day, finally got the car fast, and you are in a
rhythm there and you try and back up and go the other way, that's not the
easiest thing to do because you have to use up all the racetrack regardless of
how fast you are going because you are going to slide to the top of the
racetrack. It makes it kind of tough. If we had just run and somebody had caught
us and we let them by that would have been different but I know how they are.
They want to get to the front. They're racing with guys and you have to gain
respect by giving a little respect. We tried, but if we didn't get
everybody's respect today hopefully we'll get it next week."
