Scott Wimmer - Koolerz 300 Notes
Scott Wimmer Event Preview
Wimmer on Daytona: Scott Wimmer, driver of the No. 23 Stacker 2/Stamina RX Chevrolet, and his Bill Davis Racing team heads to Daytona International Raceway as one of the hottest teams to watch in the NASCAR Busch Series. The team won four of the final eight races at the close of the 2002 season and they are ready to continue their hot streak with a win at Daytona.
"Our team is really excited about getting the new season under way, especially with the momentum we had at the end of last season," said Wimmer. "Even though we have a new car manufacturer and a new crew chief, I feel we have a strong season ahead of us and a shot at a real good run at Daytona. The bottom line of racing at Daytona is if you have a fast car, people will draft with you. I feel we'll have a fast car, so I'm going to try to keep it up front most of the day, but drafting is give and take. You know you'll get shuffled to the back a time or two, so patience is key. I know all the Cup drivers have more drafting experience than most of us Busch guys, but I'd like to see all of us Busch regulars stick together and make sure one of us ends up in victory lane at the end of the day."
Drafting: Wimmer drove the No. 23 Winston Cup car for Bill Davis Racing at Talladega last fall, subbing for Kenny Wallace. Wimmer felt the drafting experience he gained from a 500-mile race, will be extremely helpful in all the Busch superspeedway races this year.
"I feel I learned a lot from the Winston Cup race I ran at Talladega last fall mainly because I was drafting with veteran drivers with lots of experience," said Wimmer. "Those guys have lots of superspeedway races under their belts and running all day with them showed me how to pick different lines and try new things. The Cup cars run smaller fuel cells, so I had to pit a lot that day, which also taught me how to get on and off pit road quickly. We don't pit near as many times in a Busch race, but I feel that experience will help me in the pits this year."
Testing: The No. 23 Stacker 2/Stamina RX team tested at Daytona on January 23rd and 24th.
"Like everyone there, we mainly focused on qualifying runs at the Daytona test," said Wimmer. "However, we were able to practice drafting the last hour of the final day of testing. Being able to draft shows you how you stack up against your competitor. When you run side-by-side, it helps you gauge the areas you need to work on before you return for the race. We felt really good about our test, so I feel we are capable of having a really strong run come race time."
Equipment: The Stacker 2/Stamina RX Racing team is taking a brand new car to Daytona.
