Scott Wimmer Event Preview - Double Duty
NASCAR Winston Cup Series / No. 27 TBA Chevrolet / Bristol Motor Speedway / August 23, 2002
Wimmer on Bristol: Scott Wimmer, driver of the No. 27 Chevrolet and the No. 23 Stacker 2/YJ Stinger Chevrolet, prepares to run his first double duty event of the year.
"It is always fun to run both Busch and Cup races in the same weekend," said Wimmer. "The extra practice time really seems to help out our Busch car, and running the Busch race the night before really seems to benefit the Cup car."
"Where running double duty really helps is getting reacquainted with the track, as things seem to change, even a little bit, each time you go back there," said Wimmer. "The extra laps in practice gives you extra time to figure things out."
"Running the Cup night race at Bristol last year was great experience for me," said Wimmer. The competition is a lot stiffer on the Cup side, especially when you're running up against guys like Rusty Wallace who's been to Bristol a zillion times. Those guys really step it up a notch over there, especially when it comes to qualifying. That will be our first focus, but once we do that, I think our race package will stack up with everyone else's."
About Bristol: Wimmer comments about the famous half-mile oval.
"Bristol is one of those short tracks that it is really tough to get around," said Wimmer. "It is hard to get a handle on your car because your car will never be perfect there. You can always find ways to make the car better."
"Everyone knows that Bristol is the fans' favorite track," said Wimmer. "Even though a track like Daytona is prestigious, Bristol is a favorite of drivers because of the fans' passion for it and the tight racing there. Also, it is great because aerodynamics and motor doesn't matter there. Getting your car to handle, pit strategy and staying out of trouble is what wins races there."
Last Year's Busch Night Race at Bristol: Wimmer posted a runner-up finish to Jimmy Spencer last year in the Busch Bristol night race. Wimmer had the chance to turn Spencer at the finish for his first Busch Series win, but chose to race him clean.
"Last year's Busch race was really exciting," said Wimmer. "I ran the race as hard as I could and came up one lap short of the win. I probably should've been a bit more aggressive, but I don't regret not taking someone out for the win. We didn't tear up our car that night, which is always important to the team. It is a hard thing to do, to come out of Bristol with no damage. It is amazing to see the stands full of fans; it is probably one of the biggest spectator races we have in the Busch series."
NWC Test: Wimmer and the No. 27 Winston Cup team tested at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 12th and 13th.
"We tested at Bristol last week and we had a fairly good test," said Wimmer. " We have a few things we want to work on before we return to the track, but we are confident that we can make the Cup race and run well. The guys are working hard at shop to get everything out of car when we go back."
NWC Equipment: Wimmer and the No. 27 team are taking a brand new car to Bristol this weekend.
NBS Equipment: Wimmer and the Stacker 2/YJ Stinger team are taking the same car to Bristol that competed earlier this year at Loudon where it finished fifth and at both Nashville Superspeedway races, where in the April race it was running in the top-10 before getting taken out by a lap car and in the June race it finished eighth.
