Aaron's 312 - Rookie Qualifying Quotes
JON WOLFE, CREW CHIEF, NO. 1 YELLOW TRANSPORTATION DODGE:
Note: Raybestos® Rookie David Stremme did not make a qualifying attempt at
Atlanta. He posted the ninth quickest time in practice Friday morning prior to
qualifying.
WHAT HAPPENED? "Basically what we did, with the new rules of rolling through
the tech room with your shocks unhooked, we had opened up a shock a couple of
clicks to get it down and get it hooked back up, not realizing that was one
of the rules on the thing that you cannot do that. When we went to close our
clicks to our correct setting they made us go back around. And with the line
being so long and with them putting us on the five-minute clock, we couldn't
get back in the tech room in time so we didn't get to qualify. They've been
really lenient on that deal. Last week at Martinsville they had an issue with a
couple of cars that didn't get to qualify. They're just so afraid of people
going back around and back around they finally started cracking down. I guess
we were the example. It was just a mistake on our part for not knowing a
rule. There's too many rules to keep track of anymore, I guess (laughs). Luckily
David is in the car this week. If Jamie (McMurray) would have been in it we
would have been going to the house because of where he's at in Cup points. I
guess we're kind of thankful for that." IS IT GOING TO BE DIFFICULT TO GET
DAVID BACK IN A POSITIVE FRAME OF MIND FOR PRACTICE AND THE RACE? "We've
already talked about it already. I think he'll b e all right. We were all looking
forward to qualifying well. We practiced well and felt like we had a little
more in it and felt like we could have had a top-five or top-10 for sure
qualifying. We're disappointed in that that we didn't get to show what we could do
there. He's doing good for his first time here. The hardest thing will be
patient at the start of the race. Back there with some of the back markers and
stuff you've got to patient with, not jump them on the start." ON STARTING IN
THE BACK OF THE PACK. "It's not that big of a deal. It's been proven time
and time, especially in the Cup race, those guys take provisionals and come up
and win the race. Our race is a little bit shorter but this is our longest
race of the year. We've got plenty of time to come up there and give them a
shot. We definitely won't get a good pit stall. You kind of hope you get
the best you can."
COY GIBBS, NO. 18 MBNA CHEVROLET:
"I've never been here in a Busch car. Bobby (Labonte) and Mike (Bliss) have
been really helping me out and that has helped me get the line down." DO YOU
HAVE A GREATER SENSATION OF SPEED HERE THAN ANY OTHER TRACK? "It's fun. If
you have a good car it's really a lot of fun. Trying to come here without
practicing is probably a mistake, as far as trying to find a setup."
CHAD BLOUNT, NO. 26 MILLER HIGH LIFE DODGE:
"We'll just try to get the car better for happy hour and we'll just see what
we can get. We just got a little bit loose there on the bump. You'll have
that." WAS THE TRACK A LOT DIFFERENT FROM PRACTICE TO QUALIFYING? "There was a
little bit of a difference. Harvick still put up a big number there so the
track can't be too slow. I just lost a little bit of grip but like I was
saying Harvick still went pretty fast so he found some grip somewhere."
CHASE MONTGOMERY, NO. 27 TRIMSPA PONTIAC:
"We expected to go faster. We got through three and four pretty decent, I
thought. I kept it on the floor. I got into one, hit those bumps, and lost the
nose and just kind of chased it up the racetrack. That cost us a pretty
decent qualifying effort. We'll work on it in happy hour. Tomorrow is what
matters." CAN YOU SEE IMPROVEMENT FROM CHARLOTTE TO HERE? "They're a lot alike,
but they are different, too. We ran great at Texas and we were running pretty
decent here. At Charlotte I struggled but we'll put that behind us. This is
this weekend and that's my focus. We're making the most out of every week and
put behind us stuff that may have gone wrong. We're trying to click again as
a team and get to working together where they know what I like and I know how
to communicate to them, tell them what I need. And we're getting there.
We'll get things going."
