Kroger 200 - Randy LaJoie Notes

No. 7 Kleenex®/Scott® Brand Products Racing Preview--------------------------------------
Event: Kroger 200
Track: Indianapolis Raceway Park
Track Specs: .686-mile oval

Randy LaJoie on IRP:

“IRP is one of the premier short track venues in the country. It’s a lot of fun to drive. It’s a lot of fun to watch. If you’ve got a good car, it makes things even better. Of course if your car is bad, then it’s not much fun at all.

“The track has two distinctive grooves, a top and bottom line. Usually the outside line is the preferred groove and that’s where most everyone wants to run. Last year, the bottom groove settled in and seemed to be the best way to get around the track. Nowadays, if a track has two good grooves, you really need to have a car that can adapt to both of them. As track conditions change, you need to be able to move around the track and possibly change your line. The car with the combo that lets it go up or down the track is the one that’s going to wax the competition.”

At a short track, how can you balance being patient and aggressive? “If you have a good car, there’s no time to be patient. If you start at the back of the field, you better get up front pretty quick or you’ll get lapped. At the same time, if you start up front, the farther you pull away from everyone, the less chance you have of getting caught up in a wreck. That’s a great thing about short track racing. There’s not enough time to set back and wait for things to settle down; you’ve got to give it all you’ve got from the start. When the green flag drops, you’ve got to show what you have. The fans are in for a treat!”
