Kroger 200 - Kasey Kahne Notes
Experience Leads Kahne to Double Duty at IRP
Driving USAC Silver Crown Thursday Night and No. 98 Channellock Ford Taurus Saturday Night in NASCAR Busch Series Race
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (July 31, 2002) – Experience at Indianapolis Raceway Park is leading Kasey Kahne to double duty this weekend. Kahne, the full-time pilot of the No. 98 Channellock Ford Taurus in the NASCAR Busch Series will first take to the track Thursday night, running the No. 67 Team ASE Silver Crown car, before jumping into his Channellock Ford Taurus Saturday night.
“I have five wins at IRP in the USAC Silver Crown and Midget cars,” said Kahne. “I really like the track and have quite a bit of experience there. By running Thursday night, I am hoping to get an even better feel for the conditions of the track to be better prepared to take the No. 98 Channellock Ford Taurus to the front of the field on Saturday night.”
Kahne ran the USAC Silver Crown race at Indianapolis Raceway Park earlier this season, pulling double duty May 25. After finishing 37th in the Carquest Auto Parts 300 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, NC, due to a battery problem, Kahne hopped on a plane to Indianapolis, IN, arriving just in time for the start of the USAC event. Kahne finished second on the Indianapolis short track, crossing the finish line behind fellow USAC veteran, Jason Leffler.
This weekend marks the first track on the NASCAR Busch Series circuit at which Kahne has had previous experience. “Every other track the Channellock team has run on so far this season, the only experience I have had is our test sessions, here at IRP I have a lot of laps,” stated Kahne. “I know the track. Not only have I raced here, I have tested here several times in the USAC Midget cars. The biggest difference from Thursday night to Saturday night will be the tires, which affects how the car handles, however I think I will have a leg up on the competition because I will know the fast line around the track.”
Kahne will take the green flag Thursday night, August 1, 2002 for the USAC Silver Crown J.D. Byrider 100 and again Saturday night, August 3, 2002 for the NASCAR Busch Series Kroger 200. Saturday night’s racing action will air live on the TNT Television Network and the MRN radio network starting 8:00 p.m. EST.
