Renshaw to Drive No. 54 BGN Car in 2003
DARLINGTON, SC -- (August 30, 2002) --- NASCAR Busch Series team owner Rick
Goodwin announced today the signing of 25 year old Deborah Renshaw to a
contract to pilot the # 54 Busch Series car in 2003. Renshaw, a late model
star at The Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, TN, recently gained fame when
fellow competitors protested her car following a race at the famed short
track. Since that time, Renshaw has broadened her racing skills by competing
in three ARCA Series races, recording two-top ten finishes and an 11th place
finish in three starts.
Renshaw will replace Kevin Grubb in the #54 Busch Series car. Goodwin
announced earlier in the year that Grubb along with sponsor Toys "R" Us and
crew chief Tony Lambert will move to the Winston Cup Series in 2003.
Goodwin, in his second year of ownership in the Busch Series, expressed his
excitement with the signing of Renshaw.
"I am very excited about Deborah joining our organization. I believe she is
a very talented race car driver with the potential to become the first ever
female to win a race on this level."
Goodwin has planned an extensive testing schedule between now and the 2003
season opening race in Daytona Beach. Crew Chief Tony Lambert will oversee
the off-season development of Renshaw.
Renshaw knows she has a challenge facing her, but can’t wait to get started.
"I am very humbled to be selected to drive for Rick Goodwin. I am very
appreciative of him taking a chance on me and helping me to fulfill my career
goals. I look forward to testing with Tony Lambert and the #54 crew this
offseason. Tony’s experience will be a great help as I become accustomed to
the Busch Series cars."
Competing in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series this season, Renshaw has
recorded three poles, eight top-five and 12 top-ten finishes in 18 starts.
Earlier this season, Renshaw made history by becoming the first female to
ever lead the point standings of a NASCAR sanctioned series. Renshaw is in
her third year of late model competition. She is scheduled to make three
more ARCA starts this year.
Renshaw will become the third female to compete full-time in the NASCAR Busch
Series, following in the footsteps of Shawna Robinson and Patty Moise.
Team owner Goodwin is continuing discussions with potential sponsors for
Renshaw in the 2003 season and beyond.
