WP Motorsports and Mike Swaim, Jr. to Compete in Limited Busch Series Events
Madison, IL (July 17, 2001) - WP Motorsports, Inc. and Mike
Swaim, Jr. will compete in the first of five (5) Busch
Grand National Series races for the year, starting this
weekend. Their first race is Saturday July 21, 2001 at
Gateway International Raceway. The race will be televised
live on TNT at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time.
Mike will also compete in the Busch Series races at
Michigan International Speedway on August 18th, Kansas
Speedway on September 29th, Lowes Motor Speedway on October
6th and Homestead Speedway on November 10th.
“I’d like to thank WP Motorsports for this opportunity.
This year we’ve gained a lot of experience as a team in the
ARCA RE/MAX Series. Driving in the Busch Series is an
opportunity that all drivers dream of. It’s definitely a
big step in my career,” states Swaim, Jr.
One of the biggest assets WP Motorsports has coming into
this race is crew chief Keith Strunk. Keith has Busch
Series experience, previously working with the #37 Brewco
Motorsports team.
The team knows they are about to encounter territory very
different from their normal surroundings. In anticipation,
one thing the crew has been doing is diligently working on
their pit stops. Other challenges they will face will be
adapting to the Goodyear tires (the ARCA RE/MAX Series uses
Hoosier tires) and the intense competition in the series.
WP Motorsports and Swaim, Jr. will still field the red and
white Chevrolet Monte Carlo sponsored by Dynatek
Telecommunications, but his car number will be #12, rather
than the normal #22.
“Driving in the ARCA RE/MAX Series has been very exciting
as a new team in the racing industry. As an owner I
couldn’t be prouder of the staff and crew involved with our
race team,” stated Steve Palac, President of WP Motorsports
and Dynatek Telecommunications.
“Moving up to the Busch Series is an opportunity we feel,
as a team, we’re capable of competing in. Mike has the
ability to drive in the Busch Series and like Mike stated
our crew chief has been in the Busch Series before joining
WP Motorsports, so he has the experience that we need to
have our team ready for the race.”
WP Motorsports looks forward to competing in more NASCAR
Busch Series races next year. Depending on the success of
WP Motorsports finding a dedicated sponsor will determine
what lays ahead for them in 2002.
In a limited ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule, WP Motorsports
and Swaim have compiled 4 top 5 finishes and 5 top 10
finishes. Mike is currently in 13th position in points in
the ARCA RE/MAX Series.
WP Motorsports and Mike is also scheduled to compete in the
ARCA RE/MAX Series races at Pocono Raceway on July 28th,
Talladega Speedway on October 20th and Atlanta Motor
Speedway on November 17th.
The 25-year-old, second generation driver Mike Swaim, Jr.
was the 1997 Goody’s Dash Series champion in only his third
year in the series. He has raced in the ARCA RE/MAX Series
on a limited basis since 1997, with a win coming at Atlanta
in November 1998. His Busch Series debut and only series
start to date came at Rockingham in 1999, substituting for
the injured Andy Santerre.
