GNC Live Well 200 - Boris Said Notes

Hired Gun Said Hopes To Leave WGI as a Smoking Gun

DENVER, N.C. (July 3) - Boris Said, known in NASCAR circles as a hired gun, lends his road-racing services to the No. 17 Visine Racing team this weekend at Watkins Glen International in New York in the GNC Live Well 200. Said hopes to walk away from the track as a smoking gun by putting the Reiser Enterprises team in victory lane.

Said, who initiated contact with Reiser Enterprises before the season began, has not spent a lot of time at Watkins Glen, but his time there has been successful. His only NASCAR Busch Series start at Watkins Glen was in the 1998 Lysol 200. Said started from the pole position and finished 40th. In the Winston Cup event at "The Glen" in 1999, Said started from the outside pole and led nine laps, but finished 42nd because of engine failure. In 1998, Said relieved Jimmy Spencer, finished 20th and earned five bonus points for Spencer by leading five laps.

"Reiser Enterprises is a front-running team and I'm excited about the chance to win in a Busch car," said Said, who acted as a consultant for Brewco Motorsports during a test at Watkins Glen last month. "I'm glad I was able to help out Brewco. It benefited them and I learned some stuff with the gearing that we'll need to know for the 17 car. The test session basically began my learning curve before practice ever begins this week."

Russ Strupp, the Visine Racing crew chief, acknowledged that Said, who owns five NASCAR pole positions at road-course events, was an obvious choice since the team knew Kenseth would not be available and Clay Rogers had not been hired when Said was selected.

"We feel like we have a good shot to run up front and win," Strupp said. "We want to earn as many team points as possible since we are competing for the team championship. Boris will also teach our team a lot since he's a road-course expert. He learned a lot about the braking system a couple of weeks ago at Sonoma with the Jasper team."

Strupp is referring to Said's nearly miraculous climb from his 42nd-place starting position to finish in 11th place in the Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Sears Point Raceway in California. Said also competed at Sears Point Raceway in 2000, starting 23rd and finishing 42nd in a Winston Cup machine fielded by Ernie Irvan and Brian Simo.

TNT television kicks off its NASCAR Busch Series coverage with the GNC Live Well 200 on Sunday, July 8, at 1 p.m. EDT.
