QUOTES

Driver Johnny Sauter on Richmond…

“Richmond is a beautiful facility and the three-quarter mile track will be a great place for me to cut my teeth in a Busch car. It’s a lot like what I’m used to driving on the ASA circuit which will help me out a bit. When I tested with the team last week, it didn’t take long to get accustomed to the car and track. It’s completely different from what I’m used to driving, but the seat time was great and helped me get adjusted. The team was also very helpful and I think they will accelerate my learning curve.

“It’s an opportunity of a lifetime to drive for Richard Childress and Rockwell Automation. The switch from my ASA car to the Busch car will be major, but I’m surrounded by a lot of good people and as long as I give good input, things should go smoothly.”

Crew chief Gil Martin on Richmond…

“We’re excited about heading to Richmond with Johnny in the car. The test we had with him there went really well and he had a lot of feel for the short track for his first time in a Busch car. He seems very knowledgeable and was able to give us some good feedback. We’ll have a good car and I think running in the top-10 is not out of the question.”

NOTES

Driver No. Seven…Richard Childress Racing Enterprises, Inc. announced in Michigan that ASA standout Johnny Sauter would run five races in the No. 21 Rockwell Automation Chevrolet starting with Friday night’s Autolite FRAM 250. The other four scheduled are Memphis, Rockingham, Phoenix and Miami.

Richmond Test…Sauter got his initial feel for a NASCAR Busch Series car two weeks ago when he went up to Richmond with members of the No. 2 and 21 RCR Busch Teams. At the test, he ran over 450 laps on the tracks new surface with next year’s teammate Jeff Green and got accustomed to the car and racetrack.

Here’s Johnny …Currently driving the No. 9 AP Plasman Group Chevy in the ASA ACDelco Series, Sauter sits atop the driver points standings with 8 wins, 13 top-5 and 14 top-10 finishes through 18 races. With three remaining, he is on pace to become the first ASA driver to win both the National Championship and Rookie of the Year Award in the same year.

On a Qualifying Role…Since Indy, Team Rock has been on a tear with their qualifying efforts. They have one pole (Bristol), one outside pole (Darlington) and two top-three starts (Indy and Michigan) in four events with two different drivers (Skinner and Purvis).

Chassis 007…Team Rock will take chassis No. 007 to Richmond International Raceway this week, the same one they ran Johnny in last Monday and Tuesday during the test. The chassis was last used at Gateway International Raceway with Jeff Purvis and before that at Watkins Glen International with Robby Gordon.
