NAPA Auto Care 250 - Hank Parker Jr. Notes Hank Parker Jr. / GNC Live Well Racing Pre-Race Notes EVENT INFORMATION - Event: NASCAR Busch Series NAPA AutoCare 250; Time and Date: 3:30 p.m. EDT; Site: Pikes Peak International Raceway, Fountain, Colo. Live Coverage: NBC Network (television) and MRN (radio); Qualifying: 4 p.m. EDT, Friday, July 28; Happy Hour: Friday, July 28, 6 p.m. EDT. LAST RACE (CarQuest Auto Parts 250) - Hank Parker Jr. and the GNC Live Well Racing team finished 36th at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Ill. After starting 28th, Parker had worked his way up to the eighth position when his engine expired with less than 40 laps remaining in the 200-lap event. STANDINGS - Hank Parker Jr. is currently 20th in the 2001 NASCAR Busch Series Drivers' Points Standings, while team owner Scott Welliver sits 23rd in the owners' points standings. LAST YEAR'S PIKES PEAK EVENT - Driving his family-owned No. 53 Chevrolet with sponsorship from Team Marines, Hank Parker Jr. qualified sixth for the 2001 NASCAR Busch Series event at Pikes Peak International Raceway and scored a fourth-place finish. A GOOD RUN OF BAD LUCK - The 2001 season definitely hasn't been the kind of year Hank Parker Jr. and the No. 36 GNC Live Well Racing team had hoped for. Most recently, the No. 36 team has suffered three consecutive DNF's (Did Not Finish). At Watkins Glen International and Gateway International Raceway, blown engines were the cause of Parker's early exit, while a cut tire sent the No. 36 into the retaining wall at Chicagoland Speedway two weeks ago. "If you'd told me at the beginning of the season that I'd have three DNF's in a row, I'd have said you were crazy," Parker said. "There's not a whole lot you can do about tires going down or engines blowing up, though. If I'd caused a bunch of wrecks or if there was something I feel I could have done differently, I'd probably be ready to jump off a bridge right about now. As it is, the team and I just have to keep our heads up and know that our luck's going to change eventually." A MANLY MAN - Hank Parker Jr. was ready to go lift some weights and watch some football after completing two scheduled interviews earlier this week. First, Parker was asked to talk about one of his hobbies, cooking, for a magazine article. Next up, a reporter quizzed Parker on his fashion sense and where he likes to shop for clothes. "I wouldn't have minded doing each of those interviews separately," Parker explained, "but one right after the other was a little much. I'm feeling like I need to get my testosterone levels back up right about now. Talking about cooking and clothes like that made me feel like I was on an episode of 'Oprah'." FANS ARE "RACING INTO GNC" - The response to GNC Live Well's "Race To GNC" sweepstakes has been overwhelmingly positive. NASCAR fans are flocking to the over 4,500 GNC Live Well locations to register for a chance to win the grand prize of a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. In addition, GNC Live Well will award prizes ranging from a trip for two to a NASCAR event, $250 GNC Live Well gift certificates, a year's supply of GNC Live Well MegaMen or UltraMega for Women vitamin and mineral supplements and even GNC/NASCAR T-shirts. Hank Parker Jr. and his No. 36 GNC Live Well Chevrolet Monte Carlo are featured in point-of-sale sweepstakes materials at GNC Live Well locations, as well as in print and television ads announcing the contest. "It's pretty cool to walk into a GNC Live Well store and see my picture up all over the place," Parker said. "I think GNC Live Well has come up with a unique way to tell NASCAR fans about its products and also to give fans a chance to win some pretty cool prizes." HANK PARKER JR. ON PIKES PEAK INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY - "It's a beautiful track in a beautiful part of the country. The main thing about the place is, you just really have to deal with the fact that your engine's horsepower is going to be down. The altitude just kills your power, so you have to have the car handling really well or you're not going to be successful. I managed a top-five finish here last year, so my confidence is up. If we can avoid some of the problems of the past few weeks, I think another top-five is a real possibility." 2001 SEASON SUMMARY - 20 starts, 1 win (Auto Club 300, April 28, California Speedway) 1 top-10 finish (California), 1 top-five finish (California), Winnings, $501,637 (Ranks fifth in 2001 Busch Series winnings).
