Outback Steakhouse 200 - Matt Kenseth Notes

Phoenix International Raceway / Outback Steakhouse 200

THREE TO GO: With just three races left on the 2001 NASCAR Busch Series schedule, Matt Kenseth is slated to drive the next two in the No. 17 Visine Chevrolet. After the Outback Steakhouse 200 at Phoenix International Raceway on Oct. 27, Kenseth plans on piloting the Visine machine for the Sam's Club 200 at North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham, N.C., on Nov. 3. Teammate Clay Rogers is scheduled to complete his 10-race season by driving in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 10.

RICHMOND CAR VISITS THE DESERT: The Visine Racing team is taking the same car to Phoenix that sat on the pole this past May at Richmond International Raceway in Virginia and finished fourth. Matt Kenseth also drove "Chassis No. 11" to a second-place finish under the lights at Richmond in September.

OWNERS' POINTS STANDINGS: Reiser Enterprises holds the ninth spot in the owners' points standings with 3,567 points through 30 NASCAR Busch Series events. In 2001, Matt Kenseth has earned 10 top-five finishes and one win, resulting in 2,730 points in 20 races. In nine races, Clay Rogers has accumulated 677 points for the Visine Racing team. With road-course specialist Boris Said finishing fourth in the Visine Chevrolet at Watkins Glen, Reiser Enterprises gained an additional 160 points.

MATT KENSETH's Comments on PHOENIX: "Phoenix is pretty cool for a flat track. The dogleg in the backstretch makes it a unique place to race. There's been some good racing in both of the Busch races. I'm sure we'll see the same this weekend. I feel like we've got a good chance to win every time I race the Busch car. The guys work hard every week to give me a strong, competitive car. We should have a decent shot at it."

CREW CHIEF RUSS STRUPP'S COMMENTS ON PHOENIX: "We've done pretty well at Phoenix both times we were there. It's a fast, flat track that hasn't had many cautions in our past races. So, we'll have to be on top of our game with quick pit stops. We're taking 'Chassis No. 11' to Phoenix. It's the same car that ran both Richmond races earlier this year. It will be hard to beat (Jeff) Burton and the 10 car, but we should be competitive on Saturday."

Last Race (October 13, Sam's Town 250, Memphis Motorsports Park): Clay Rogers led a NASCAR Busch Series event for the first time in his career at Memphis. Just 20 laps into the race, Rogers attempted to miss a wrecked car driven by Mario Hernandez. However, the right-front fender of the Visine Chevrolet made contact with Hernandez's car. The body damage to Rogers' machine caused a tire rub to the right-front tire. Rogers pitted twice under caution, laps 24 and 34, to fix the problem. The two unscheduled pit stops dropped Rogers to 34th on lap 37 and put him out of pit sequence with the rest of the field. During the fourth caution period of the race, which began on lap 60, the Visine Racing team chose to stay on the track while the leaders pitted. Using pit strategy, Rogers moved up to the point and took the lead. Handling trouble kept Rogers from remaining in the top 15. Running 19th on lap 209, the leaders came in for a final pit stop, and he stayed out again to move up to seventh. He drove under Kenny Wallace on lap 223 to take over sixth. Rogers finished on the lead lap in 12th to collect his best finish of the season.

LAST YEAR'S OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE 200 (November 4, 2000): Only 10 minutes remained in the final practice session for the Busch Series race when the Visine Chevrolet billowed smoke from the rear of the car as Matt Kenseth exited turn two. A broken drive shaft led to some major repairs before the race. The Visine Racing team changed the drive shaft, transmission, rear-end gear, rear-end pump, bell housing, fixed the truck arm mounts and patched any other areas that needed work. Kenseth moved his way into the top-10 pack of cars just 25 laps into the event. On lap 51, a caution flag gave Kenseth an opportunity to get four fresh tires with pressure adjustments and fuel. The Visine Chevrolet remained in ninth place before the cycle of green flag pit stops began on lap 130. The No. 17 car came in for service on lap 138 for four tires, fuel and a wedge adjustment. It was open racing for Kenseth, who gained three positions in the last quarter of the race to finish sixth.
