Outback Steakhouse 200 - Johnny Sauter Notes
Johnny Sauter
Event: Outback Steakhouse 200 Date: October 27, 2001 QUOTES Driver Johnny Sauter on Phoenix… “I’ve never been to the Phoenix track before, but I hear you can compare it to any flat track like Milwaukee or Miami. I have a lot of experience on flat tracks from the ASA races so I feel good about it. The big thing will be to stay on the bottom, let the car roll through the corners, and don’t overdrive it. “It was good to have this past weekend off because I feel like it’s been non-stop since the end of the ASA season. I’ve done a lot of testing with RCR since then and that’s been a lot of fun. Going into this weekend’s race, I won’t do anything special to get ready. I’ve just got to use my head and give the car what it wants. The rest should take care of itself.” Crew chief Gil Martin on Phoenix… “Everybody is looking forward to heading to Phoenix after the off-weekend. We had a good test at Rockingham last week and saw Johnny adapt to the banked track very quickly. The toughest thing about this weekend will be getting Johnny some track time. We are lined up pretty good in owner points so we can spend a lot of practice time in race set-up and go from there.” NOTES First Visit…Saturday’s race will be Johnny Sauter’s first on Phoenix International Raceway’s 1-mile D-shaped oval. He has a lot of experience on flat tracks running on the American Speedway Association ACDelco Series circuit and hopes that will transfer over into this weekend’s event. Memphis Blues…The 2001 ASA Champion showed a lot of promise in only his second Busch Series start at Memphis Motorsports Park two weeks ago. After starting 5th based on owner points, he held his own running in the top-3 most of the event until a loose lug nut forced him back onto pit road with 40 laps to go and relegated him to a 13th place finish. Owner Points…Although seven drivers have shared seat time in the No. 21 RCR Chevrolet this season, Team Rock has maintained their focus by adapting to them and working hard to stay up front. Despite the changes, they are 5th in Owner points with one pole, one win, 9 top-5 and 12 top-10 finishes this season. Testing, Testing, Testing…The 23-year old Sauter has been busy the past two weeks traveling to different tracks to work-in some test time. Last week, he took on North Carolina Speedway for two days to try and figure out the track’s rough surface and high banking. On Monday and Tuesday of this week, he visited Miami-Homestead Speedway with RCR’s Winston Cup teams to get a feel for the flat, 1.5-mile oval. Chassis No. 007…Team Rock will try to make it “Third Time’s a Charm” with chassis No. 007 this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. This is the 3rd time in a row they’ll race the chassis with Johnny in the car. The other two races were fall Richmond (Finished 5th) and Memphis (Finished 13th).
